I just wondered what others do when asked to quote a job that would be quite labour intensive. Do you go ahead and quote for it regardless of whether you have the manpower – and worry about how you are going to do the work if you get the job.

I have recently been asked to quote for a job that I’m unsure I could handle myself. Part of me says to turn the job down – the other half says quote for it and worry about how you’re going to do it if and when you get it

if it is specialised ide turn it down… its hard enough finding vinyl fitters never mind anything else.
if its just labour, extra hands, manpower then yeh, thats pretty easy to come by… so ide quote.

If you could do it, then you will. Unless it is just impossible for the resources I have, then I would take the job on.

You only live once, worry about the details later.

i’d agree with rob, if it’s just a case of manpower, i’d simply add on x amount to pay a pal (obviously a competent one) to help me for the day, done it a few times now.

just be sure your liability covers you for ‘extra man days’, i think mine allows me to have up to 100 temp worker days, ie, one man/bird up to 100 days a year, or 100 men.birds for a day, working of course !

    Phill,

I use extra labour all the time. I have to. Sometimes the reason is volume of work and sometimes it’s distance, but fairly often we have to look outside our internal resources to get the job done and keep the client happy.

I know it can be traumatic having to rely on someone else, and can be difficult choosing someone initially, but do it often enough and you will build up a network of folks you can trust to do a good job and who you can call on to help out when necessary.

We get posts on here from members who are going through a quiet patch so what is better than to be able to give them the opportunity to earn some money. It might be me looking for work next month so I like to think of it as mutually beneficial.

I regard being able to call on fellow uksignboard members in my times of need as one of the major benefits of the site.
