  • Experian telephone Call – genuine or not?

Posted by Phill Fenton on November 29, 2016 at 9:17 am

I had a phonecall yesterday claiming to be from Experian and asking for me by name. The caller claimed to be representing one of my suppliers and were carrying out credit checks on their customers so would I spend a few minutes answering some questions. When I queried which supplier he was representing he told me he was unable to tell me that so I told him I didn’t believe his story and hung up.

Anybody else had a similar call?

Haven’t had one from them, but plenty others purporting to be updating their records, carrying out surveys, etc. etc. Whether they are genuinely the businesses they say they are or not, IMO they are data mining with intent to profile you and either sell on the data or use it for purposes way beyond what they say they need it for. I’ve played along with a few in the past (before cutting the conversation short) and the questions get increasingly intimate and detailed as the process goes on.

I wouldn’t entertain any of them these days!

Sounds dodgy to me, when we credit check anyone, we just get a PDF report. Not as comprehensive when it’s not a limited company as there’s no filing requirements for the self employed.

think i would do the same. Im soo suspicious of anyone calling me asking questions, you have to be really careful. If they are genuine im sure they would have emailed or posted you something not just called.

Had a random phone call at work today…

"Hi is that the sign makers?"
    ME: yeh.
"wonder if you can help, do you make those magnetic signs?"
    ME: Yeh.
    "with vinyl on them?"
    ME: yeh.
"if i have a logo, can you make that too?"
    ME: yeh.
"Does the magnetic lose its bond the older it gets?"
    ME: yeh.
"Well i called another sign guy in Livingston and he said it doesnt!"
    ME: yeh.
"Well i went ahead and bought some from a sign guy from Kingdom of Fife but it was just floppy plastic panels he gave me and wont stick!"
ME: Yeh… it was the guy in Livingston that sold him them…. then i hung up.. :awkward:

I dont think he was from Experian though!

Had one the other week. Saw the number as a definite telesales.

    (Usual muffled call centre sounds)

Hello this is (can’t make it out but sounds like the usual patter)
    Are you the business owner?
    NO
Can I speak to the business owner?
    NO
Do you know when he’ll be back?
    NO
    Can I have your name?
    NO
    Your name is No?
    NO
    What?
    NO

She then went into a tirade of mixed English and Urdu calling me for everything…hey I can waste your time too honey…

I normally just mash the keys on the phone to send a load of random tones at full volume down the line but fancied a bit of fun.

Some time ago I had a call from the "accident investigation centre" about my "recent car accident". I decided to play along…

me – Which car accident are you referring to?

them – the one that happened recently

me – which one? The Ferrari or the range rover?

them – er.. the range rover?

me – The white one or the silver one?

them – You must have a lot of cars?

me – Yes I do – I am a very rich man, I run a call centre business that cons people out of money…then I hung up

Honestly – it really happened – maybe that’s why I get plagued by all these nuisance calls now :awkward:

I had the same call some time ago but it was definitely genuine in my case as I had just applied for a credit account with a supplier who told me they use experian to score and verify the business but for life of me cannot remember the supplier. A lot of companies now insure their accounts and it’s the insurance company that regulate the account and credit limit.

I had the exact same call on Monday, sounded strange as it’s only me here that would apply for a credit account, there was also a message on answer phone with a ref number, I ask who is the company in question and he said he didn’t have that info to hand (oh yeh right) and he will call back ! Not had a call back as yet !
