  • Expensive ‘Simply Red’ tickets

Posted by Martin Cole on February 25, 2009 at 11:35 am

This is the story, since the last awfull couple of years me and the wife try and go some where nice once every couple of months, concert, theatre etc.

She fancied seeing Simply Red, our usual venue would be the 02 arena, but typical me left it late to get descent tickets 🙁 So on the net I went and ended up booking tickets at the ‘Radio City Music Hall’ in New York…as you do 😮 .

Long and short, fly out 12th March concert on 15th come back 16th.
We have always wanted to go to NY, and had it booked twice but had to cancel so really looking forward to it. Any tips from any of you that have been would be nice especially where to eat, staying in central Manhatten.

Finally…I still couldn’t get great tickets, but after persisting I managed to get these ones at standard rate through legit agency, still expensive but hey..it’s only money

Zoom in and follow line on pic 😀

Me neither Hugh, put me there with the killers on stage, I’d be a happy bunny 😀

Funny thing is I was out to dinner with my Mum on Sunday and she said due to high demand Simply Red had added extra dates in London 😮 😮

thats 😎 Martin I’m sure you will both enjoy it, we have always wanted to go to New York as well. I believe you need visas for America now , have you sorted it ??

No visa required for British Citizens Lynn.

Apart from a machine readable passport, you have to fill in the Advanced Passenger Information form. The airline or travel agent will normally have that sorted.

Have fun! That is fantastic, not a fan of Simply Red but would love to see the architecture of Radio City Music Hall.
Have not been to NYC since I was 7, so I imagine it’s changed quite a bit.
They do show tourists getting carriage rides in Central Park, that looks fun.
I heard that the hot dog stands on the streets are good eats too, not good for you but fun.
And you will be out of the city before the St. Pats festivities begin.
    Love….Jill

    Thanks all,

Lynn as John says had to fill an ‘ESTA’ form on line that will allow into the states, all done!

Jill, the RCMH is a wonderful building, a guy who works for me had a tour a couple of years ago. I can’t wait to see it.

I’ll also be doing the horse ride bit in Central Park, I’ll be a typical tourist hawian shirt, shorts, long socks with sandles with a camera dangling round my neck 😀

My tops is the Statue of Liberty always wanted to visit that, such a shame now your not allowed to the crown anymore 🙁

And yes will be leaving day before St Patrick’s Day parade….phew!

Oooh I do remember all those stairs in Miss Liberty.
You could still get into her crown then.
And the Staten Island Ferry ride, lots of gulls.
I think we went to the top of the Empire State Building as well.
But hell that was almost 40 years ago!
    Enjoy!

Oh come on Jill. New York is only just down the road from you. I make it about 380 miles.

Leave now, and you could be there in time for dinner. 😀

I remember in 03 when my Scots friend and I went to Canada, she got a TON of Canadian $$ for her British ££.
Glad to hear I will be getting more bang for my buck.
But I usually just charge everything on my credit card, it’s not like it’s real money.
    😉

I can ask my niece from Jersey for any travel tips for you, she and her hubby go to NYC at least once a month. They probably know some good bars and museums.

Martin NY is an amazing city you will have such good fun. I was there a couple of years ago America never really appealed but I had a wail of a time it was made all the better that New York had its largest snowfall ever around 3ft in one night and it was valentines so it was all very romantic.

I can highly recommend the Waldorf Astoria to stay and not as expensive as you may think its a huge hotel 1200 rooms so always doing great rates to fill it, – check out there website – what a hotel. To get brownie points withe wife order a stretch limo from the airport to the hotel. My high point was a trip to a Harlem church to watch the gospel singing truly amazing. Helicopter ride over the city Ice skating in Central park a cheesy horse and cart ride all awesome stuff – you will have a blast. Times square, NY city library your hotel concierge will have a list of stuff to do anyway but just walking around is cool.

The only downside is Simply red are playing when you are there. Bummer!

Fantastic Martin, after all you have both been through, its thoroughly earned I reckon. Its only money as you say. Work to live and not live to work as they say…..

We had Simply Red in a small concert at a winery down the road about a fortnight ago.. Not a huge fan, but it is a lovely setting and the wife would have enjoyed it, but saving my pennies for the UK trip, so we’ll have to do something a bit later.

Only 48p to $A1.00 at the mo 🙁

Could be worse, Cold Play could be playing.

Thanks for the info though, I’m staying at the Milford Plaza, can’t stretch to your tastes Nigel.

Thanks Marcella and Shane, money took a back seat on this one, going to try and take the kids aswell at Chistmas.

You are near Times square though it will awesome its like daylight there all night. I hope you have a fabulous time anyway Martin (the Waldorf really aint expensive by the way) Let us know how you get on. If there is one thing you do though, do go to see the gospels singers in Harlem, its a very moving experience.

Checked the Waldorf, wasn’t as expensive as I thought although not cheap, may do it next time.

I spent christmas in New York 2 years ago and went to the RCMH on christmas night to see the Radio City Rockettes, it was brillant, central park was nice, empire state etc, overall the city itself is a bit over hyped but all in all i would go back.

Been back now for a time so thought I would post one or two or 15 photos of New York.

Firstly the concert was fantastic, love em or not Mr Mick Hucknal has an amazing voice, and the seats were literally next to the stage I could have put my feet up while sitting down. He gave me a couple of high fives, it was a real experience, they even let you take pictures (no flash) so I did as well as video on my phone.

The Radio City Music Hall being a superb venue all art deco just breathtaking, even the toilets were incredible.

New York was big, busy and very very cold, but the afternoons did warm up.

Times square at night is an awsome sight. All the buildings make more money selling the outsides to advertisers than they do doing their real business inside.

Done all the major sites, Statue of Liberty being my favourite.
Central Park nice but a bit barron as not in bloom yet, would be lovely to see it in spring/summer.

Grand Central station is a jaw dropper, apparently they were going to knock it down 😮 but was saved.

Our feet have never ached so much, and could hardly walk by the end.

New York shop staff were probably the rudest people I have met, their word for thankyou is next as they hand you your change and look to the person behind you.

Best bit was waving to the kids back home on the Earth Cam while in Times Square…technology hey!

Nigel, alas didn’t make it to see gospel signers 🙁
but did go through Harlem on the bus.

Couple of concert photos aswell as touristy snaps

    Martin

Lovely shots (well maybe not so much Simply Red but he seems nice enough)
You have saved me a ton of $$ as I now do not need to return to NYC.
Glad you both had a great time, sorry about the rude clerks.
My little great-niece Regan went to the Empire State building last week.
She is two and lives in Jersey.
She kept shouting "I can see my house!"

I enjoyed that too. Can’t believe its 10 years since I was there, January 1999. The twin towers were still there and got video footage from way up high of the streets. Would love to go again sometime, but there’s lots of places I’d love to go! 😀

Sounds like you had a dream Holiday there Martin. 😀

As a child I was fascinated by the Statue of Liberty (I used to tell my mother that when I grew up I would become an airline pilot and take her to see the statue of Liberty). So far I’ve seen a Saturn Five Moon Rocket up close (another of my lifes ambitions) but the Statue of Liberty has continued to elude me.

I understand that since 9/11 you can no longer go inside and see the view from the crown.

I’ll get there one day 😀

Phill these photos are just for you 😀

I’ve been fascinated by the SOL for years and years couldn’t wait to see it for real and on the only clear day we had, it’s beautiful.

Looking over to Manhatten from Liberty Island is one of the most amazing views in the world, just breathtaking.

You are right, no longer aloud to go up to crown but can go to viewing platform just below statue. They have windows where you can look up into statue from inside you can see the spiral staircase and framework as per photos below.

The security to get into it is harder than it is getting into the states 😮
The last step after many is to go through a machine that blasts air at you, this apparently smells you! Even the lockers to leave your belongings takes your fingerprints.

If you get the chance you must go over, well worth the trip alone.

John, the flatron building is an amazing piece of architecture and Grand Central although a bit smaller than I thought is just beautiful.

Finally, Jill, I’m glad I saved you a few dollars, I can post some pics of Birmingham and and save you a few more quid if you like 😀
