Here is an example of a combined process award , the base was done in African Rosewood on a Tekcel Overhead router , the “mask” is a digital print , laminated onto 2mm brass and epoxy domed , the brass star was cut on an ISEL CnC engraver and engraved to take the burgundy colour fill and then passivated in chromic acid to give a crushed effect and then it was plated.
The “clear” section is 8mm acrylic which was laser cut , the “glass” is actually not glass , but a 3mm transluscent acrylic that was reverse laser engraved using a fine diffusion halftone patterns to get the fades in the ellipse (you cant see it clearly) and then the text was laser engraved using solid fills.
We made 15 of these awards for Archbishop Desmond Tutu which were handed out to various “legends” in various fiels (in fact 8 of them were posthumous awards)
They stand about 38 cm high and cost the client R2500 each (GBP 180 or so)

Excellent work mate… thanks for sharing.. (hot)

Can I ask? Who came up with the design and who thought up the manufacturing process?
Not trying to be nosey just asking. This is something I love to do. Come up with something original from a thought in my head to the completed job.. Job satisfaction to no end..
    Great stuff mate.. πŸ˜‰

p.s. like the idea of the doming on the mask.. πŸ˜€

I come up with product development and design myself , as well as working out the best way of making stuff.
Thing is , we have a lot of processes and machinery so making something is not that difficult and there are quite a few ways I can do so.
What I like most about design , conceptualization and mnfgring is whan someone says it can’t be done and I prove them wrong!!!
One of our problems is the huge amount of materials and substrates we work in and on.
Various vinyl and inkjet films for the PC60/pnc 5000 and the soljet
different films for the laminator , pouches , mounting films and so forth
Huge amounts of substrates and materials for the lasers – they work on just about anything that isnt metal , there are custom laserable substrates , all the plastics and acrylics , leather , fabrics , formicas , foams , wood veneers , the list is endless.
Different metals , woods and laminates for the CnC engravers etc and Then all our trophy components (we import , mnfg and distribute trophys , components , engraving plates etc)
I sometimes struggle to keep up.
Current projects I am working on right now are:
A range of various upmarket brochure holders , from A5 to business card size that is modular , IE you can add various sizes to each to create a sort of desktop information centre
A polyester encapsulation system (You know those bugs you see embedded in clear resin)
A semi automated dosing system for our doming section
A table top extension for our soljet so we can print directly onto coated rigid substrates
A male/female die system so that we can emboss or deboss various vinyls prioer to daming (which gives a 3d look to whatever is in the dome)
A cheap vacuum formed mini lightbox
A led based lighting unit for edge lit signage (rather than using the low voltage long tubes which are very expensive and bulky cos of the transformer)
A series of Aluminium rod wall studs that allow a use to easily change digitally printed displays (the “posters” are samwhiched between 2 pieces of clear acrylic and the stud has a top that unscrews to allow changing – will also be good for other signage)
A pepper grinder and salt shaker that looks like a wine bottle
    Various point of sale systems
A hinge system for menu covers and other items that uses acrylic front and backs
An inexpensive white board type fridge magnet that has places for die cut and domed stickers of various household products – a collaboration with a supemarket chain and their suppliers – you get the whiteboard free , you buy the various products with their stickers ,when the board is ful , you take it back to the supermarket and get a free kitchen wall clock
Various clock and desk clock designs
A range of coasters , coaster sets , coaster holders
A spectacle neck thong with swivel discs that can be branded
    A desk top spectacle “rester”
A cd caddy that saves loose Cds lying on your desk from damage
My own clear “bumpons” – bumpons are VERY expensive clear feet often used under various items or glass , they cost us 50c each , by cutting 8mm clear vinyl and doming these “dots” with flexible resin , the cost reduces to about 5c , we use 1000’s of these
An acrylic thermoformed celphone cradle that allows charging whilst on the desk
A tilting mechanism for our lasers that will allow beveled lasering (currently our lasers can only cut straight down)
A cheap portable roll away/up display system for digitally printed banners
A pneumatic pad (tampo printing) system
A range of desk/bediside lamps using ostrich egg shells that have been engraved
A range of paint stencils with african themes for the local DIY/hobby/craft markets and a range of rubber art stamps to compliment this
(Stencils can be cut easily on vinyl plotter if you can have stencil material laminated with a paper based low tack removeable carrier )
A range of laser cut self adhesive formica letter for the local signage industry as well as various standard size (a4/3/2/0) self adhesive formica backings suitable for vinyl cut letters
A standardised range of upmarket door and room signage (its a sort of slide in system that can easily be changed and is suitable for vinyl cut lettering without looking “cheap”)
A range of “marbelised” and other paint finished back sprayed acrylic sign substrates that can be either revese engraved/lasered from the back , front engraved or lasered and is also suitable for vinyl cut lettering
Same thing , but front coated on brass suitable for burnish type engraving
A range of very expensive business cards using combinations of various thin substrates which can accep digital prints or be laser/cnc/die cut
    (around GBP1 each)
A trailing knife system for our flatbed CnC engraving systems to cut and score thick material like corrugation, thin films , wetsuit material , sailcloth , thick reflective films and material etc
A range of cheaper churchware – ciboriums , wafer trays , communion trays , communion wine flagons etc.
A roll thru system that will allow us to laser engrave photos and other impossible to blast artwork on gravestones (the laser tables cannot support the weight of headstones)
a range of humidors and presentation boxes for various objects like wine bottle , whisky bottles , medallions and so forth
Replacement fancy dials for instrument clusters for the “boy racer” crowd
(as well as a standard range of vehicle graphics , wheel inserts , gear knobs , pedal covers , subwoofer protectors etc for the same)
Various scripts , programs , lisp and vba routines to automate common tasks in our signage , laser and engraving packages
Back laminating various thin films with paper carriers to enable the local signage co’s to cut or score stuff other than vinyl (like the stencil material)
A large format easy to use self sharpening rotary trimmer for the laminating/large format printing industry
An upmarket badge that enables users to easily change names or other info on it
So in general , Im pretty busy:)
