  • Estimating Software – views/opinions?

Marvelous software Quickbooks – we do all our all our accounting and even the estimates on it. However sometimes it seems of late I spend an increasingly more time on the latter than in selling and making signs. With time and experience I will no doubt get quicker at it.

Pricing jobs quickly and profitably and with a degree of consistentcy is key.

I would be interested to know the views of UK Signboard members, if you have or had similar issues, how you overcome them. Is estimating (programmes like ESTIMATE or CLARITY) software an answer, does it speed up the proccess or is a good old fashioned price book and cost a job by Price per Square Mtr the quickest method.

    Any views, advice or opinions?

I used to manage one of the “Fastsign” franchises and we had our own in-house software called “Point of sale” which was american and quite fast. What i found most useful about it was that i could go out and survey a job and have a quote with the customer within half an hour (or less) of getting back to the office. It was usually this no nonsense, fast turn around pricing that got us most of our work.
If I could find a good one now, i would use it all the time. You mention “Estimate” & “Clarity”, where could i find out more on them? Searching online doesn’t seem to throw up anything….

Martin try Touch Systems they produce the Clarity software.

I use Clarity fantastic, very quick no guestimating. I have my price per minute punched in plus all my material costs even down to screws and bolts, so when it comes to quotes you just select each item down the list required for that job and it gives you the cost. It integrates with Sage, produces job sheets, invoices loads of reports for sales that day/month/ quarter etc.

    Hope this helps

If I recall correctly, Fastsigns is using a version of Cyrious Software’s SMS (shop management system) for their estimating, etc. SMS isn’t a bad program but it is fairly expensive to install when compared to something like Estimate. I like SMS but it seems like I am always on the phone because it can’t find the hardware key 🙁

    Hi,
I use estimate, I must admit it took a little while to get all the info in but once it is done it is great.
The only real drawback is that it works in feet and inches. My accountant has commented on what a difference it has made to my profit levels!!!
I think Rising has a free trial version on his web site.
    Cheers
