Epson white & metallic inks, views and feedback please?
Just wondered if anybody any experiences to share for using white and metallic inks on the Epson S80600. Just got that printer, haven’t tried metallic yet but have experimented with white a little bit!
Just wanted to hear any tips that anybody has! For example, has anybody tried a double layer of white underneath colours on certain materials where a single layer of white doesn’t seem quite strong enough?

Yes I have the 80600. Use double layer white on clear applications and single when doing colour/white/colour. Upping the pass rate to 32 pass and sometimes 64pass gives an unbelievable finish. It’s trial and error as different media needs less/more. Single layer on blacklit helps too. It’s changed my business and printing white jobs 2-3 times a week and getting a nice premium. Factor in additional print time and more ink used but the uplift to customer is much more!

Hi Neil, so to put 2 layers of white down, how exactly do you achieve this?
Have you done anything with the metallic?

interested in the difference between the roland and epson wht met i run the roland pleased i got it and use it but what a pain the maintenance of the wht is. the met is fine just keep it agitated.
the white does not have to be as dense as you think in real life in cmyk wht the amount of wht is trimed down compared to just wht print then double striking is fine but the problem is the media can only except so much ink.
increasing the passes etc prints in a finer drop size and gives more drying time as it prints.
there are lots of pitfalls using the wht met but as you understand whats happening more you can be more adventurous.
have funprint the wht + met on coloured vinyls really nice effects

Neil may know better than may, but as far as I’m aware you just have to keep the white agitated, don’t think it causes any more hassle than that!

I’ll come back to you on the two layer bit when I’m back in office on Wednesday and can see the rip.
Yep, tells you when to agitate the inks. That’s it! Cleaning the printer is just once a month so far. I used to clean the mutoh once a day!!!!

I’ve found that part of the rip where you can change the settings, my queries were more regarding the artwork! Do you just add 2 sets of your white print? Are they in separate layers?

if printing just white then you tell the rip to double print it will change the mode and lay the ink twice in one pass in a controlled manor.
the rip will handle wht and mt different from cmyk , normally if you set up a file eg. yellow filled circle with some black text it will print the yellow except where the text is and fill the text with black ink so there is no yellow under the black text. change the yellow to white and it will print the entire circle wht and the black text on top of the wht ink.
same applies with the mt. if thats not what you want then you have to knock the text out of the white area.
you can tell the rip to print the white on the bottom or on top.
if doing a window sticker for outside on clear then white first then cmyk if for inside cmyk reversed then white all that accomplished within the rip. -

i use the roland versaworks
that epson is some fine bit of kit presume you have to buy a rip to get the best out of it, see it comes with drivers but don’t know any more, if i was buying tomorrow it would be serious contender. it could replace and improve on our vs for its main work we do on it. -

Oh that’s easier! Set your artwork as just one layer. If you are printing onto clear sav with black text, your file should have two layers, one black text and the other the white backer, we normally make this an orange spot colour. You don’t need to have two white layers on the artwork.
