  • Engineer changed maintenance unit and print head is misfiring

Hi all. Well what a day im having.

So  ive had my secondhand mutoh 1614 just under a year now. So far so good only issue really is when left for a day or 2 without printing 2 black nozzles get blocked but with a clean they come back. So today i had the "yearly" maintenance unit changed, capping station and dampers by a mutoh engineer. Once its all done he is doing test prints and nozzle checks, and basically the lines are not matching up anymore on the black, misfiring. more cleans and tests and no change. Tbh its hardly noticeable on a print but still the quality is not as good as before he touched it. So im obv saying wtf? and he tells me that this can happen with older machines, maybe because of the vacuum when changing dampers etc its sucked through some dry ink etc etc.

So im 800 euros lighter and should be feeling happy that im looking after my baby. Where actually i feel i should have left it alone and done nothing and if i get 3 or 4 years out of it before the head dies then im winning.

    Any owners had this experience?

Im obviously hoping it plods on and gets better with time as a new head is worth more than the printer :yikes:

Could be the head “breaking in”
I don’t think there is such a thing. But when we had a head replaced the reds where terrible etc.. quite fuzz/grainy. After a few weeks of printing there was a noticeable difference but nothing had changed. I was told that was the best I was going to get at the time. Customers never complained.

I had the same on Mutoh Valuejet 1204.
Maintenance unit was not changes properly and print head was not "resting" well on the maintenance unit and therefore the cleaning cycle was not done properly.
I called the engineer again and the issue was fixed.

Thanks pane, i would hope he has done it properly but obv its hard to tell. One thing i did notice when i cleaned the capping staion yesterdays was that its very lose, bouncy and moves. It didnt do this before, it was in a solid position but im no expert as to whats right or wrong

Do you mean by "the lines are not matching up anymore on the black" that they are missing or they are not in the correct place?
If they are missing is it always the same ones?
If they are not in the correct place it could be ink getting left on the printhead by the wiper if the wiper is faulty?
Could you post a photo of the problem

Picture attached. Before the work was done everything lined up a treat.

have you tried soaking the head?
I have use a clothes peg to seal / pinch the 2 tubes coming from the pump and cap top then fill the cap top with cleaning fluid. Leave it to soak for a few hours and then give it a few cleans and test prints.

Sorry, I’d get the engineer back to correct the issue – you’ve paid 800 euros, and having print issues & unhappy with the capping station.
Before trying to fix the issue yourself, which could invalidate any warranty, I’d call them & explain the issue.

Yes we did that yesterday. Waiting for a response. Been also having "data error" 75% of the time during print since the work has been carried out. Although this is coming from the rip it seems like a strange coincidence. I wish i had left the thing alone now and worked it until it died :shake:

Just an update, sorry for the delay.- So i took your advice and got the enginner back (although they assured me i was kicking up a fuss over nothing) and there was a problem, one of the springs in the capping station had come off and so it was not sitting correctly.
So you play it safe and spend the money on an engineer to do the work and it still goes wrong.

Anyways just wanted to say thanks to all those involved, often without the knowledge you just go with what the "expert" tells you. In this case it would have cost me a new head.

Thanks again and have a pleasant day
