What could i expect to pay for a new or second hand basic embroidery machine, i am thinking about expanding into this area.

Theres loads of differant options.
signle head, 2 head,4 head, etc.
a new single head costs about 6K depending upon manufacture.
a new machine called the Amaya, looks interesting, if it has more than 1 heads, you can sew out differant designs at the same time, something my 4 head can`t do.
a new four head will cost close to 22K.
don`t forget you will need software, anywhere from 1K to 12K, unless you farm every design out to a digitizing office. Basic software only allows you to do text.
second hand. I was very wary of them, when I was looking. You can never tell how much work they`ve done.
I bought a new 4 head from YES in nottingham. 01623 863343, the 2 year cover swung it. 2nd hand you only get about 3 months.
you can pick up 2nd hand machines for about 5-6K(4heads)
you really need a copy of printware and promotion. call 01622 687031 for a free subscription. All embroidery machine/software companys advertise there
