  • Edge sealing tape – recommendations, please?

    Hi all.

I have been trying, without any success, to source some clear edge sealing tape. The one I hear about all of the time is 3M Edge Sealing Tape 8914. It is freely available in the US, but after speaking to 3M (who didn’t really have a clue and passed me on to someone else) and William Smith (who 3M didn’t pass me onto) it appears that this is a US only product.

I contacted a company in the US who sells it but, apparently, it is not legal for them to ship it outside the US.

So, the question is, does anyone know of an equivalent product? I already have the 3M 3950 liquid edge sealer, but think that in certain situations (sealing window perf graphics etc) that tape would be far quicker and more efficient.

I saw a post from earlier in the year Wrapping My Boat, any advice or tips welcome? but didn’t want to re-open an old thread. In that post, the last comment the OP (Dave Rich) made was that he used lots of ‘edge sealing tape’.

I was hoping someone (or Dave himself) might be able to let me know what tape it was and where he got it from.

    Thanks in advance.

    quote Gary Barker:

Hi Gary. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I could. It would mean running the laminate roll through the cutter to produce lengths of 1m, 2m, 3m etc by 12mm.

I know I can do it this way and have pretty much resigned myself to doing this, but thought I would ask just in case somebody has already been in this situation and has found an easier workaround. Especially the guy in the post I linked in my original post. He’ll probably say that this is how he had to do it, in which case I’ll just get on with it and do it.

if you use alot of it you can get rolls slit to the widths you want.

Was discussing the issue with a friend, over a pint, and he said "I have family in America. I can get them to buy some and just box and send it over".

    Hmmm…..

Received a phone call from William Smith a few days ago.

After talking to one of the managers about this, one of the girls found out that the 8914 edge sealing was a ‘made for US only’ product. But she also discovered that the edge sealing tape was basically just 3M laminating film cut to a 12mm x 50m roll.

I already knew this but, and this is the bit I was not originally told by them when I contacted them, they CAN, as Gary suggested, actually cut and make the rolls to order. It’s a bit pricey compared to how much it costs in the US, but at least it is available.

Just thought I would add this to close the topic properly.

We cut tens of thousand or pre-cut lines for a customer every couple of months.
I have an order for them this month for around 600 metres of 48inch wide rolls in various line widths .25 inch up to 2 inch wide. Very easy and quick to do. also means you do not need to outlay for stock. Just cut what you need, when you need it.
