Heres some edge lit signs I did a few weeks back, 1 for the shop and 2 for demonstration purposes.

    1,
700mm extrusion with superbright blue twister led’s,
10mm cast acrylic 700mm x 300mm flame polished edges, (not visible in picture)

    2,
500mm extrusion with superbright red twister led’s
10mm cast acrylic 500mmx 300mm flame polished edges, (not visible in picture) Hibiscus flowers done in white oracal 651. (effective eh?)

    3,
300mm extrusion with superbright green twister led’s
10mm cast acrylic 300mm 300mm flame polished edges,

I enjoy making these a lot.
Have to be VERY careful though as it scratches so easily.

The light source is in the extrusion they hang from, above the acrylic.
so the Led’s shine down through, but they can be lit from the side or bottom too.

    Nice Work Steve,

We’re just about to do some of these ourselves so need a bit of advice….

Where do you get the extrusion from, and do you get bar length or cut to size with the LEDs already installed?

Also what speeds/settings are you running the router at, and presuming you’re using a v-shaped bit, how deep are you cutting?

Sorry for all the questions but these are some of the best edgelits I’ve seen so I thought I’d pick your brain…….

    Cheers
    Joe

I buy the extrusions from applelec, they are expensive but far better quality than some of the others out there and certainly a lot cheaper than many out there, they come with the leds already fitted so no soldering or taping, the router is a V bit you are right, speed I think is about 25000rpm, (I dont do that bit) but as for depth, it all depends on the thickness of the line, if you go much over 5mm or so it really would need to be raked out rather than V cut, for this I would probably sandblast.
The extrusions come in pretty much any length, but most commonly up to 2m

kings plastics who after calling yesterday to see if they would sell the extrusion separately to the kits and leds, they said no they wouldnt sell them separately as they have to be sold in a kit, I was told its because they make a lot more money than just selling the extrusions and they wouldnt sell me any, ok theyre brochure is in the bin,
Applelec are sending me a foot of ali to work with for free, as Paul the production manager is interested in different ways of hanging the signs, and we have a few ideas, its amazing how different companies are prepared to help isnt it.
We supplied applelec with the stainless hanging pins for the edge lit kits as they couldnt get them, so I suppose its reciprocal.
Anyway the extrusions come unfinished but can be polished and laquered, or anodised or powder coated, so plenty of options
    Cheers

    Thanks everyone,
    glad you like them.
Its a direction I want to head in with my business, I want to offer something a little different than just vans and shop signs, theres a lot of scope with these, and I have just made acquaintance with a perspex engineer from London who has just moved here, we sponsor his son who is a semi pro skateboarder, and he is in the know to say the least.
    watch this space.

Good stuff! I do wish I could see them in person to get the full experience. I especially like the "Cocktails" one. 😎

Come to the shop Simon and see them, while your on the way pick me up a 54" versacamm for half the price they cost here, and possibly a laser engraver for the same deal.

Do me a favor and double it! You drive a hard bargain Steve. That’s my final offer.

What I meant was usually anything that is in the USA with a $ sign on it, translates over here with the same price tag but the $ turns into a £
Lovely old greedy government we have.

Yeah I was just kidding around. I understood what you meant. Somewhat of a joke between friends here sometimes. They ask for something and I tell them to double it (as a way of giving them an even better deal). It takes nearly 2 of our dollars to get 1 pound. Talk about highway robbery! Would love to smuggle those for you. You think they’ll fit in my carry on? 😀

Depends how big it is, better off smuggling a suitcase full of new 12 megapixel cameras or something and selling em to get a versacamm.

either that or a suitcase full of that new crystal meth stuff you taught our drug dealers to make,
it sounds great, lovely teeth and great hair for starters.
