Recently aquired Edge package with GS15+ plotter/Signlab e6 and am having problems with inconsistant contour cutting around small decals. One of the main jobs for the package is to create text with a contour cut outline and on the smallest size text (10mm high) the outline varies by as much as .5mm over 100mm of vinyl. Rather than an outline I end up with a shadow that moves around the letters depending where they appear on the vinyl.

When Spandex demo’d the Edge they used an envision cutter and Omega but thier outline was perfectly even around each letter.

Has any one experienced similar problems with the GS15+

If I can’t resolve this I may be forced to send the whole lot back.

Without seeing it it is hard to say whether this is a real problem or just a product of the slightly iffy registration problems of the edge. The answer on this occasion is to put a bleed around the the printed text. If you haven’t got a bleed around the text you are attempting something the edge and plotter are not capable of. That is, absolutely perfect registration.

A bleed isnt possible with what i need to produce as the contour cut forms the outline around each letter. If the cut is out of reg then the outline turns into a shadow. I know you cant get absolute registration, whats more worrying is that it varies from one letter to the next over a very small distance on the vinyl.

None of the samples cut during the demo varied. They wern’t always spot on but they were the same across the sheet, not variable as I’m getting.

When you cut small decals does the cut move around within the bleed area you set?

I could go on for hours about the potential causes for poor edge registration. For example, print with a nearly empty cartridge gives different registration to the same print with a full cartridge. If the cut is out over a very short distance, as you have described, I would be asking the supplier for an explanation. That said, there are ways around some of these problems. I don’t use an Edge any more, I’m sure others will have more constructive ideas as to a solution to this. I found that there were idiosyncracies with the Edge set up that you had to get used to and find cures for. I still rate them highly.

Thanks Big G, This has been driving me nuts all weekend. It sounds like I need to call Spandex tomorrow. If necessary i will get them to bring their envision along again to see if that fairs better. They first sent the GSX+ in error, so i didn’t get the GS15+ until last thursday. I was wondering if the stepper motors in this cutter were not as accurate as the servos in the envision but I can’t find any data on the resolution of these cutters.

    Cheers, Col
