• Edge 2 LPT Problem

Posted by Cabbage on December 15, 2003 at 4:30 pm

We have recently updraded our design PC and have installed a couple of extra ECP lpt ports on a PCI card. The dongle and Omega do not like lpt2 & 3. Does anyone know how to make it work??!!! These ports are OK to print to normal printers. Help please

Bob might step in later and correct me, but I believe the Edge likes to run on LPT 1 can’t you run your edge on that? and other devices on LPT 2 & 3.

I have my Edge on LPT1 and my Omega dongle is USB.

I think the Gerber software looks to LPT 1 as it used to look for Com 1 if you used a Gerber GDS2 system….again Bob might correct me there.

I think you’re right on this Henry, I was told to use the dongle in lpt1 even if you plug the edge itself into a different port as the software always looks for it there.
So the advice stands as is – plug it in lpt1 and use the others for different printers etc.

    Good luck…

I have a Dell Precision Workstation, and asked Dell about extra LPT’s at the time of purchase, but after talking with Spandex here came to the conclusion that a USB Dongle and Edge on LPT1,was best, and with that combo I have had no communication problems.

    Henry,

I was under the same mindset, connecting the Edge device to the port that is integrated on the motherboard and moving the security device to the add-on ports. I have had “less” successful then “more” when attempting to connect an Edge device to an add-on card/port. It’s been done, just not always pleasant or a “go” at first attempt.

I was in contact with Cabbage last evening (afternoon my time) in an attempt to assists but came up empty. Not one to enjoy having the computer “win”, another attempt was made this morning (my morning, early afternoon local). Appears something “magical” happened cause it’s working now. Sad thing is, its working the opposite way I thought it would. I would really like to share what was done so others could benefit, but not sure what ultimately was the cure. 🙄

Moral of the story, “If its working, don’t try and fix it!” (or understand it) 😮 😀

Something any GA or Omega based shop should do is a proper configuration of the Sentinel driver. This is especially true if an Edge is involved. Configuring the driver to “search” or “scan” what ever port has the actual device can go along way in reducing possible headaches since the system won’t be looking “everywhere” for the key.

One thing most Omega 2.0 users will agree on, especially if Edge based; moving to a USB security device makes life a lot nicer (back me up on this Henry?). Can’t speak for Spandex, but I would imagine most of their sales agents, reps, techs or what have you are also very joyous for a USB based security solution.

Anyway, hope Cabbage is much happier with his Edge2 machine today then he has been recently!

    Cheers!

Thanks to Bob, I take back everything I’ve ever said about Spandex. (For now).

I have noticed that this PC of mine is slightly more complex than my Sinclair ZX-81. However, I followed the instructions in Bob’s mammoth e-mail, tried the edge and it still said “No Way!” and then put the dongle back into LPT1 and the edge one in to LPT3 and away she went. Who can figure it out?

Bob is a shining light in the cesspool of signmaking and goes to the top of the class. Thanks to everyone else who helped as well.

    Cheers.

    Charlie
