  • Edge 1 – Help needed to check out exdemo / 2nd hand unit

Posted by Tim Lucas on February 18, 2005 at 8:40 am

    Hi anybody,

I’m in the throws of purchasing either a second hand Edge 1 or an ex-demo unit from a distributor complete with omega 2 software and gsx plotter.

My question is simply this: What specifically should I look for and check out on these units to ensure I’m not getting a lemon???

    Thanks in advance,

    Tim.

Print a solid band of colbalt blue on white about 2 metres
this is a good test to see if the print head has blown any pixels
(colbalt blue shows up better for some reason than any other foil)

….and when you’ve done that, look at the print head for any discolouration of the thin black line that runs down the centre of the print area. Repetitive printing of the same images can ‘burn’ a mark on the head. It’s hard to describe, but the element shouldn’t have any discrepency in its thickness. (It looks like a thin line behind a clear narrow strip right in the middle of the head assembly)

    Thanks guys,

So apart from the head there is nothing else to look for?

    Tim.

There aren’t many moving parts you can check. I looked at one once and the fan on the back was so full of crap, it looked as though it had never been cleaned. I suppose, as with many things, your impression of whether something has been looked after is important. Other than that, you are going on trust and a bit of luck.

Ask whether any of the parts, in particular the head, are under warranty. You never know.

Hi Tim: I don’t think Gerber made any lemon’s – The machine is solid. The only thing likely to go is the head, and even that’s rare enough, does happen though – you might try checking how many minutes / hours are on the unit. I think you can do so on the control panel of the machine. Be warned, some of these have been to the moon and back. A good port of call is http://www.4edgetalk.com, that’s where the EdgeHeads hang out. Steve.
