Hi All, just got the following e-mail and may be I’m tired and grumpy but it has irked me:-

"Hi, I’m after a price for the wrapping of a three door standard hatchback wrapped in a standard gloss vinyl colour. Inner door shuts and returns not required. Please let me know what you can do price wise on this. Please also send across a price structure if you have one as I have a number of friends interested. Look forward to hearing from you, Many thanks, Kind regards, Ryan,"

OK, so all very generic, didn’t sound like a scam (not suggesting it is in any way) – my immediate thought was a competitor fishing for prices, or a ‘boy racer’ and not really worth spending much time on as a low probability of them ordering a full wrap.

As usual did a quick Google search of the senders e-mail address, rez123@hotmail.co.uk, to see what it turned up in order to assess what effort to put into the response.

Anyhow, judging by other posts and discussions on assorted forums and freelancer sites seems he’s setting up a "compare / find a vinyl installer" website – nothing wrong with that and good luck to him.

BUT the surreptitious approach really annoys me – there’s no way I want to appear on such a site without my knowledge – if someone is open with me, tells me how it works for me and the end user etc etc. then I can consider it.

Has anyone else had the same??

    Cheers
    Macky

    Hi David

Thank you for the heads up and i do think you have a right to be concerned.
I too am not comfortable with this approach and if he really thought it was in your best interest for generating such a site, he would have made it clear from the start.
He is vinyl applicator / wrapper and is registered on this site. ironically, his only post is looking for the cheapest vinyl he can get to wrap with and is not the correct media for the job either.
Do not get me wrong, Being a wrapper and trying to find the going rate within the trade as a benchmark, "so as not to under price himself" is understandable and something we all have problems with at some point. But trying to set up a compare the market type thing for Mrs Mopp on the high street, will only damage the wrapping industry on the whole. As you will know, there is a multitude of things that need taken into consideration pricing a wrap. it is not an off the shelf product and is a specialist application.
If Joe Blogs wants a Mercedes van wrapped in white using APA wrapping film by an inexperienced wrapper it will be one price.
If Joe Blogs asks for the same van in white, using Avery Supreme from an experienced wrapper. It will be a totally different price.
The reason is JOE BLOGS hasn’t a clue what he is buying. It is up to the wrapper to select a media that is suitable for the complexity of the van in question.
The variables in this pricing exercise are huge and not something the "high street buyer" will every be able to choose from using a website, hence why it can only damage an area of our industry that is already being damaged by wrapping cowboys.

Staying with the theme of scams.
Had a call today from someone with a Glasgow number and accent purporting to be from Virgin media and offering me "discounts available on my account".
Knew my name and location but went fishing to get the first two letters of my password. Now, being the suspicious type (as I’m already screwing Virgin to the ground for price) I smelt a scammer so called him on it. "I’m not telling you that as I have no way to verify who you are"…" Responded in kind and added "I can give you a clue to your password, it’s the second name of the person who played the lead in Scarface". Even had the audacity to argue with me when I said " nope…not even close"

At that point I assume you are meant to go "no, it’s xxxxxx".

    Eejits.

    For reference, if you get a call from 0141 413 02 three five…it’s a scam…

Had a guy call in to the unit last year with 3 BMW’s to wrap, asking for prices. Smelt a rat because realisticly who has 3 identical cars for a colour change no branding?

After being told I was more than double what he pays, I ended the meeting with "please go away, and go back to whoever you used before"

Also had virgin media spam lately.
