Now either I have missed the bargain of the century or I have just been saved from being mugged.

There was a Summa D60 brand new plotter on E-bay which went for £750 (half price) my last bid was £740.

Next day an e-mail from seller saying winner wanted to pay in 2 instalments so he would not sell to him I could have it for £670 and mentioned to protect both he would take out insurance with e-bay – because he had paid £10000 in to a fund with them. He would get a transaction number from them and any problems regarding delivery would need this number to claim.

Well I felt like a fish looking at a worm on a hook was I about to be reeled in. I remembered reading somewhere if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Nobody could afford to pay £10000 in to a fund especially has he only had 4 ratings against his name all for buying. Why reduce to £670 when I offerred £740 and he had an hotmail e-mail address.

So have I been a mug or nearly mugged – I think I just saved £670 cos I have ignored it. I e-mailed e-bay saying I thought it was a scam but of course they do not seem interested as I have not had a reply.

Hopefully this will act as a warning for members to be careful on E-bay

I really wanted that plotter – Just like my luck if I fell in a tub of womens breasts I would come out sucking my thumb

Let me guess – was the seller shipping it from overseas ? did they want paying in cash / bank transfer or western union transfer only ???

Theres a Roland PC600 on there at the moment from a seller with 0 feedback in Thailand or somewhere – so any prospective buyers beware !!!

What most of these sellers do is ‘sell’ it to the highest bidder, and then email every other bidder saying people have pulled out and offer it to them as well – they generally start the auction on 1p with no reserve, as this gets loads of bidders hooked on there.

I’ve found a good method of finding out if a suspicious looking auction is genuine is to email the seller and say you’ll collect it for cash – if they are overseas say you have a friend who is local to them and will collect on your behalf – if they are a genuine seller and have the item, they wont have a problem with this – any umming and aaahing and you know theres something up !

Also, never buy from anyone registered in Russia, Eastern Europe, Thailand, Vietnam and beware of Germans ( cos they generally sell broken stuff and then try and blame it on shipping damage – they have weird laws that protect them from legal action for doing this !!! ).

Actually the guy was called Ali Mohyuddin from Portsmouth.

Do not get me wrong I have had some bargains of e-bay but I do get mad I have heard nothing from them to stop other people getting ripped off. I wonder by replying and admitting it was a scam that they are frightened they get dragged in to any litigation.

I think I will just save up and get a new one from a supplier with the benefit of a guarantee. It is always difficult starting off on your own but this is exactly the time you do not take risks.

These guys rely the £ signs in our eyes thinking you have a bargain and they are so convincing.

I know it is a little off the subject but I remember a scam where a friend of mine went to buy a TV at discount from a member of staff (allegedly) in a big store in Newcastle. The guy met him in what looked liked the store uniform took him to the TV section choose the TV then took his money handed it to a security guard or what looked liked the security guard and told him to bring the car around the back. Well you know the rest – These guys should have equity cards
