  • Dust/dirt speckles under vinyl

    Hey guys

I have a question regarding dust particles or dirt under the vinyl. It’s one of those things that really bug me and I always seem to get them.

I recently put some vinyl on skybond, printed images went on lovely, in certain light you can see speckles in the vinyl. I’m using 751 I clean with isopropyl before layering but I always seem to get it, any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

Whenever possible I try and lay vinyl or prints onto board in a near vertical position. We have a 16′ long easel on one wall so this helps. Also get some Tak rags, body shops use them, to wipe down the surface just before application.

Tak rags will help as Neil suggested, might be worth looking at the area you use to apply vinyl as well to see if there is anyway you can cut down on dust particles. What sort of heating you use will make a difference, anything that blows warm air won’t help as it will carry airborne dust particles. Clothing you wear can make a difference as well. You really need a clean room environment to apply vinyl but unfortunately that’s an extremely expensive way of doing it :lol1: :lol1:

Thanks guys, unfortunately I do everything in one room so it’s very hard to keep it spotless, heating is just standard radiators but I’ll give those tak rags ago to see if that will improve things, I might also try doing more things upright as Neil suggested.

Like Dave says if you have a carpet in the room get rid of it & put in something like linoleum that’s easy to keep clean and doesn’t harbour dust like carpet does.
Do you need to do everything in the one room?? Now the better weather is on the way could you do some of the messy jobs either outside or in a garage?
Try & remove any protective coverings from media slowly to help prevent the build up of static & buy yourself something like a lab coat which will spread less dust.
