  • Drying time – pause between copies, Versaworks

Posted by David McDonald on September 21, 2011 at 7:35 am

    Hi All

Have an RS640 with Versaworks. Want to print 100’s of A1 posters on Metamark MDPP poster paper – however using the Metamark recommended profile (or any other profile I’ve tried) the prints are never dry enough by the time they wind onto the media take up – ie. can’t leave them printing unattended.

Does anyone know of a way way in Versaworks to set a time delay between copies to allow drying before the next one prints? I seem to recall doing it years back in Colorip but cant see where to go in Versaworks.

    Cheers

In versaworks instead of custom roll use custom cut I think it is. Set the dry time and then the number of copies for each section. Its under media settings. Thats from memory.

Its always an issue on the Versacamms. The best we ever did was to put a fan heater in front of the print and slow the head speed down therefore giving the print longer to dry.

On the AJ we paid for someone to come in and profile it for MDPP rather than use the MD5 profile as Metamark suggested and now have no issues with drying on MDPP. Still need the heater though.

Probably going to be alot of trial and error.

    Cheers

I have the same set up and it is a pain in the Arse.

I was advised to print on high quality, as it’s higher resolution, and smaller ink droplets so will dry quicker. Also you could print omni directional, so the print remains on the heater longer, but it will slow print time down.

If you’re going to use the drying time function on Versaworks, I am sure it’s each job. Ie: So sending 10 posters to print it will print the 10, then pause to dry. Only way I can think to get around this is to send the same job to print numerous times. I print 2 A1’s side by side. I can’t leave it to print the first two, as they have a habbit of touching the cross bar above the take up unit, and peeling the ink off.

I would maybe try that, put two side by side on versaworks, set the drying time, and then rip. Send the file to print x times. It should que them.

I usually print them off in two’s and just find somewhere for them to dry… i hate printing big runs of posters.

I did try some spandex paper, that’s 200gsm, and their’s was touch try off the printer. I used a this profile for those: Solo Media – Solo photo matt.

    As for your original question:

In Versaworks open the job Printer settings -> other controls -> use custom settings.

You can set head height, drying time, and something else in there.

Check Rolands web site, as they have plenty of profiles to download, until you find the one that works.

If you do what I said it will dry after each section. So if you want to print 1 metres worth then dry for ten minutes just set the custom cut to the width of your media and 1000mm as the length and set the dry time. You can lay out your artwork as many times on that custom page size. So you dont need to hit print 100’s of times just set the quantity to how many you want and put it on the automatic take up and go home.

    David,

I like most people have had the same situation. When I use the specific profile, I find that it never dries in time.

One thing I have found though is to use the Generic Vinyl 1 profile printing in ‘standard’. I also use a desktop fan on the print as it goes to the take-up.

I have found that to work.

    Hi

Just to confirm we printed 134 posters the other day and this worked fine, set the cut sheet length same as the poster length, set a 5 min pause between each sheet and left it printing overnight on the take up. All fine and no prints sticking to each other on the roll.

Thin it was Jason who pointed this out – cheers for that.

Yes it does work a treat, I’ve not printed that many, currently printing 10 A1’s at the moment and did 16 odd size posters a couple of weeks ago using Jason’s technique.

I even passed on this method to another member on here in another post.

    Many thanks Jason.

I don’t know Versaworks at all but I would look for an option like scan dry time. This will pause after each pass to give it chance to dry before setting it to do he next one, although obviously, this is going to add a lot to your production time.

Have you considered trying a RIP that doesn’t overink?
