  • Drop flags, mesh possible?

Posted by Ian Muir on March 9, 2009 at 2:06 pm

    Hi
Have a customer wanting several ‘drop flags’ approx 1 meter width x 3 meters down, held by horizontal bars top and bottom.

The location is in a very windy spot and similar flags they have had in the past have not lasted too long, being ripped by the wind.

Does anyone know if mesh material would be more suitable, also if using mesh whether the impact is reduced too much over normal flag material.

Perhaps there is material out there similar to the rip stop nylon I used to have on my paragliding chute.

Or perhaps a heavy duty banner grade would be better.

    Any advice welcome.

Ian, I am using printable polyester material on my Beach Flags. Sewn Into the edge from the bendy bit at the top to the bottom of the flag is nylon rope. This stops it flapping so much and holds it tighter in the wind. Maybe this poly material is what you want. Sublimation suppliers should sell it.

Have a look at wind flex banner arms. They bend to deflect the wind out of the banner………

Not sure on suppliers, but you can check them out at Hampshire Flag….

The mesh I have has supplied in the past from then is quite tough stuff.

    Hi guys
Thanks for the input thus far, giving me some good ideas.

They are on flagpoles approx 6 meter high, all that’s there at moment is the top horizontal bar, the customer is sending further details of the previous supplier used in next few days.

Paraglider cloth is not air permeable!!! One of the many things that keeps you flying with one :lol1:

Having a method of spilling the wind and allowing it to pass through should help alot. Im doing something similar, but using polyester material to form back-to-back flags, wind is an important factor with these too and Im using flexi poles.

The ideal solution is a frame that rotates with the wind and keeps the flag on the lee side of the pole.
