  • Drilling into marble clad fascia …how?

    Hi gang,
The last sign I had to fit to a marble clad building was small enough to put up with double sided tape (after destroying 3 sds drill bits I gave up and stuck the damn thing on!)

Now I’ve just had an order for a sign to go on a marble clad fascia….letters on locators and I’m wondering hot to drill it…….there are holes from the previous tenants sign so it must be do-able…..
Seems like a silly question , I know, but is there a special bit or drill or technique or something????
    Cheers

PS if anyone knows of special drills/bits etc where do you get ’em?

i never use hammer /sds action, and always drill slowly as poss until right into it, only ever used regliar masonry bits, the polished face is the hardest bit to get thur normally, however, some marbles are harder than mike tyson, so there may be other ways to do it,

    Joe,

we had a similar problem a few years ago.

Normal masonary bits wouldn’t touch it so we got a diamond tipped drill bit for about a fiver – went through no problem.

    Hi Joe,

This should help, once you know the location of each stud placement on the marble, gently push and twist a hand held scrib ( the sort used for cutting ceramic tiles ) then add a little more pressure similar to the action of tightening a screw.

Then place your SDS bit on the small indendation and slowly drill without hammer action. The mark you made with the scrib will help prevent your drill bit from slideing across the face of the marble. When happy that your well on the way you can speed up your drill.

more often than not there will be a cavity behind the marble, if you take the first few holes steady and find there is no cavity you can then take it easy using the hammer action. It also helps if you can get your body behind the drill as you have more control on this kind of surface.

    Regards Russ

hi Joe, I have just drilled 200 odd holes in a marble facia, did it with a Granite bit from a Mica store, maybe one down your way. Don’t use SDS, I used my 24v Dewalt and an 18v Hitachi, no problem.

    Cheers
