Double sided tape
Posted by Mike Grant on January 6, 2005 at 9:34 pmCan anyone recommend a double sided tape that can be used on an engraving bed to hold the goodies down. I have just done my first multi little bits and bobs job and used my regular tape only to find after a complex engraving process that took almost half a day that I spent the next 3 hours having to painfully clean the adhesive of the backs of the aforementioned bits and bobs! So can anyone advise a brand and supplier, and I would only want to purchase small quantities and NOT a truck full!!!!!!!
Thanks in anticipation
Mike😕 😀

Hi Mike, Don’t know how big the bits & pieces are you are engraving but we used to have all sorts of bother trying to clean down acrylic after routering it using double sided tape to hold work pieces down. Is it possible for you to use a vacuum bed, or some sort of sacrificial surface that a pocket can be cut into to hold the work piece or possibly some sort of jig. Just always found double sided tape was more trouble than it was worth. Nothing was worse than getting a long way through a job to find that the tape hadn’t held properly and the work piece had moved.
I know it’s not exactly what you were after but hope it’s of some help -
try here mike i use them and they have every tape available 😛 sorry i cannot help out further, but i do know ed uses a tape similar to what your after!! 😀 but we cannot remember the name of it, if you phone them they are very helpful!! 😉

mike we use some only on occassion as we have a vacuum bed, but i have used a tape that does come off relatively easy with no real glue, if any left.
the down side i see of this stuff is it sticks good. so you cant put to much down as it will give you grief trying to remove it when routered/engraved.
ill look out the make tommorrow and post it. -
Mate, on my engraver I use double sided tissue tape from Stylus.
Bit of a pain to get off the plate some times, but it is so thin, I sometimes just leave it there and keep adding more until I finish my project.
The glue comes away clean tho so there is no real problem removing it when the time comes.
Not much help tho I am sorry
cheers

Hi,
I cover the table top and the acrylic with application tape. I then use generous amounts of the cheapest double sided tape sandwiched in between the application tapes. When I remove the application tape I have no adhesives to worry about. The adhesion of the application tape, although ‘low tack’ provides more than enough strength to secure the workpiece.
Give it a go, you’ll be amazed how well it works.Clive

Now that sounds like a plan! I shall try that next time. 😀

Buy that sticky mat stuff , its bloody expensive for a biggish sheet , but it holds anything flat right down securely and is resuasble , you plop it on , engrave it and then pull it off. Most engraving supply houses have it. We did 2000 silver money clips using it recently and the amount of time and cleaning it saved us was 500x the cost of the piece.
Otherwise #m(scotchbrand) double sided tape works well (called carpet tape) , pulls off in one piece and VERY cleanly and has enough teck to hold down small pieces.
We use it on machines with sacrificial beds when we cut right thru if we cant use vacuum.
