  • Door name plates – suitable material?

Posted by Ben Innes on April 12, 2007 at 9:32 am

Have been asked by a teacher friend to knock up some door name plates for an area of his school that has been refurbished.

Can anyone recommend a suitable material that I can make the plates from? The lettering will be vinyl and the plates will need to be (reasonably) easily cut into different sizes.

The biggest plate will be 100mm x 300mm (each title has the same thing written in 3 different languages underneath the main wording, hence the size).

It has to be robust mainly and and hopefully not look too nasty as a secondary issue. Oh, and it needs to be cheap…

Foamex or dibond, i would say, foamex is cheaper, di bond looks better.

Went with foamex. Nightmare to get a tidy looking cut on it though.

Foamex is one of the easier materials to get a tidy cut with saw or knife. There may be some guides on the forum somewhere.

hmm….. engraved silver or gold kemco/trafflite panels with matching screws and caps from your local engraver. Looks sh*t hot on the doors.
Pricier than foamex panels obviously, but so much classier. Schools have mony… they’ll love em. Your engraver will recomend how many screws to have in each panel also. i.e if it’s 60mm x 300mm, you’d only need one each side. if it’s 120mm x 300mm, one in each corner will probably look better.

xpres do precut metal plates in a variety of colours/finish, not sure of the size. I think about 50p each but in packs of 20. Can be sub-printed onto or vinyl. That or go to B&Q

if you dont have engraving facilities, try 3mm clear perspex, put the lettering on the reverse (cut in reverse obviously) then spray the back in light coats, gold/silver or any colour, when dry laminate in vinyl for protection.

The advantage of this is that it looks good and kids cant pick the letters off (you just know they will..!!)

Dye sub them, or get someone to do them for you, then you can have any effect you like, brushed aluminium, (yes American spell checker that’s how its spelled) gold, silver, marble,
banana skin whatever takes your fancy.

Or clear acrylic with laser cut or flame polished edges and window etch looks nice too.
