• Domes not setting.

Posted by Martin Oxenham on January 9, 2014 at 12:03 pm

We have tried making some dome stickers using Acuflow.
It does not seem to set completely and the surface is slightly sticky.
Left them one day and night in a warm propogator box.
The stuff i slightly out of date….would this the reason ?

It does make it really soft. If a month or two gone – it’s fine…a year and it just jelly…longer and it might as will be liquid!

Made the mistake years back of getting a ‘trial’ pack of 10 tubes…used 3 or 4 and left the rest on shelf…two years later, well, gigantic waste of money.

    Hi Guys,
I also made the same mistake buying bulk tubes. Here in Menorca it is very humid, and humidity really effects the tubes, we now buy to order when we have an order and do not keep stock. Two months out of date will be your problem. We have had tubes not set properly, and tiny bubbles appear late in in the curing process, because of humidity. Give Eddie at Acuflow a ring he is very knowledgeable and helpful and sorted out all our problems with doming! his prices for resin are very keen too!

    Cheers

    Dan

Might have been how they were stored? Got too warm in a sunny window or above a radiator or even ‘frosted’ if in a shed?

Dunno what the storage specs are – gave up on doming a while back (think it was Spandex stuff)

I think is was told they should also be stored vertically, and preferably with silicon anti humidity packets.

The resin I use comes packed in Nitrogen filled foil packets, and it is advised to store them in the fridge (NOT freezer!!)

A possible cause can be if you dome only a very short run or singles. The 2 components don’t mix proper for the first ml or so. I discovered this after noticing the first 1 or 2 namebadges I domed in a batch remained tacky, while the rest cured perfect.

The first squeeze now goes into the waste paper bin…

I have always believed that they only have a 3 month shelf life from new, so 2 months out of date would mean you throw it away. Whenever I have had to do some I always make my own domed stickers for my signs, looks posher than just a sticker and you would be throwing the dome stuff away anyway.

    What’s the typical outdoor lifespan?
