Does Omega V2.0 work on Windows 7 ?
Posted by Adrian Neill on August 23, 2011 at 7:30 amAs per the title ….. we’ve just upgraded the main PC in the studio and it’s pre-loaded with Windows 7. The version of Omega that the old PC was running was V2.0.
I seem to be having trouble installing the software and have a funny feeling that the two are not compatible ?? 🙁

I do not know anyone who has made it work. If your Windows 7 is 64 bit it will definitely not work. The Warp Nine driver we used for the high speed parallel port is no longer available. We do offer an Omega upgrade to 4.0 and USB to Parallel cable (for the EDGEs) and a USB to serial for the plotters.
-
Yeah it is the 64 bit version apparently.
I don’t actually need to connect to a plotter so the serial port bit isn’t a problem. Is it not possible to just get the program running without the need of a plotter connection ?
-
I think you just asking for trouble unless someone else has done it and wants to share. Maybe if you install XP Mode on the Windows 7 and install 2.0 under that it MIGHT work.
-
You need to be running either windows 7 pro or ultimate to be able to run windows version of xp mode but have read about others using a 3rd party software, sure it was on here.
-
Adrian, did you get anywhere with this?
We are going to a 64bit machine and its the one piece of software I’m worried about because of its age…..
I’m not keen on the upgrade price but have to have it working as I have 10 years of plotting jobs on it!!

Hi Richard.
Unfortunately not. Did spend a bit of time trying to get the software to work but with no joy. Luckily I don’t use Omega that much so it’s not the end of the world, especially as we have another two PC’s that are running it.
I’d still be VERY interested if anyone has managed this. Sorry I couldn’t be more help Richard.

For Windows 64 bit I say no way as explained above with the WarpNine driver, it’s only a 32 driver not 64 bit. As suggested you might want to try the Windows 7 XP mode and when installing 2.0 you may want to install with a lower "compatibility" mode. I know we will NOT try it here as it is a big waste of time and effort to support something that old with limited resourses.

Thanks for your reply mate . . . . seems I may have to keep my old pc purely for running the omega software, 1577 jobs in that format!!! Dont think Ill be transferring them over to something else! :lol1:

Come on, create, sell a sign and upgrade. I’ve got 4 more years on the mortgage.

Well worth upgrading to Omega 5, had an overview at Spandex the other day. Looking forward to trying out the automatic alignment cutting with it, hate the bomb site.

When were you there Jason? we went on Wednesday PM, it was a good afternoon. A lot of interesting things going on. I may upgrade to get more out of the Edge. The back-cut option look d great too.

If I were to upgrade to 4 or 5 I’m assuming all my files will still open and be fully editable!?!?!? Also assuming that 4 will work on 64 bit?
Sorry for all the questions but it seems easy to ask people who have already done it!!
-
Of course this is coming from the "horses mouth" but yes you can open and edit all previous Gerber PLT files w/ 4 or 5 for edtting and you can "Save Back" to previous versions also. Both versions operate on Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit)
If you get a new computer w/ no serial or parallel port we offer the following cables:
USB to Serial for cutters.
USB to Parallel for the Edge I and Edge IIThese work in both 4.0 and 5.0

Can you upgrade from anywhere other than spandex?
They weren’t exactly desperate to sort me out a decent deal when I enquired a while back…….
-
That I know of that is your only choice, but other UK users would know more than I. I’m strictly a software guy, no sales, no marketing.
-
Thanks your input!! I’m assuming there will be quite a difference going from 2 to 4 or 5!?
I’ve always loved omega, so simple to use and work with…. I hope it’s still the same!!
I would have been alright with spandex but I have no leverage anymore as I jumped to Robert Horne years and years ago….

Go to our web site http://www.gspinc.com, Spandex may have the same??
and check out the Software whats new

Hi Neil, we were there in the morning, nice lunch 🙂 Shame we missed you. I enjoyed the presentation, a good reminder.

I’ve used Omega for over 22 years (it had a different name back then) and always buy every single upgrade.
The very latest version 5.0 is definitively worth having, many many new features.
In the past 2 weeks the new nesting feature alone has saved me in terms of time and material as much as the cost of upgrading, so it’s already paid for itself.
And yes, for the UK you must buy it from Spandex, talk to Hannah in software & hardware sales.

Just a heads up……. I was cutting yesterday from Windows 7 64bit on Omega 1.56!!! :lol1:

With 2.X there are some files that need to be registered with the system and many times these fail via the instal and have to be done manually.
The other thing is permissions. Microsoft has new rules on what folders can be written to and which ones you can not. Best to be full admin with UAC turned off. An example of this is the gsp.ini file in the C:\Windows folder
On a Windows 7 32 when you attempt to update a file in a folder that MS would like to deny a virual folder (virtual store) is created with the file in it and the system handles the rest. For 64 bit OS you will just get denied period.
With Omega 4 and beyond many will notice that folders have been moved around to "follow the rules". XP is different than Windows 7. For Omega we added a "Gerber Folder Locations" menu item under the "Gerber Omega x.x" startup menu item.

Its working so thats all good!! My friend has even set up a section of one of my drives that is ‘linked’ to the virtual machine for easy access importing exporting etc

I know most have no idea what I said (geek talk) but since we do not support it any longer I did not want to get wordy – it could be a book.
