does anyone use dell computers for work?

That’s a decent price. But you could do with an extra 256mb ram and it has onboard graphics which won’t get the best from the 17″ TFT.

I know 256mb is not much these days but it’s enough for now, cheap enough to add some more later if I need it. In the past I would have got carried away adding ram & hard disk space etc. making a big difference to the price. 512mb was an extra £80+vat I think.

There were no options to upgrade as far & the graphics were concerned 🙄

thats a great price on the dell brian.
we paid £1100 for a dell about 4-5 years ago. had nothing in it really..
p2, 64mb etc but no graphics card or sound! 😮 came with windows 98 only.
we also only got it at that price as we bought it through a friend that buys comps in for a university in glasgow so you can work out for yourself the drop in prices from then till now.

anyway.. we run signlab on it thats all.. has worked non-stop since we got it and not one thing has ever broke down on it. im also sure its the same mouse.. you get what you pay for i guess… 10/10 from me!

I’m working on an old Dell
Seemed to be the best price at the time even though Simply Computers is just a couple of miles away from me. Simply Computers do good deals as well

I remember my 40 meg hard drive 236 and 4 meg of ram
if I remember right Brian you installed it for me back in 89

A maths co processor luxury took me a year to save up for that one
I still have the mother board somewhere I took it out and threatened to frame it for old times sake

I used to buy Gateway computers, bought a Dell Precision Workstation 340 a year ago, with dual monitor (21″) and have been really happy with it.

I run my Signprogrammes in one monitor and all plotter/Edge output or Tools in the other. Or if I want to work from an original can have a picture on one and recreate on the other.

I wouldn’t go back to a single monitor computer. This ordered with lots of extras etc, cost about £2000.

I run a dual monitor system as well, I have all my work on one monitor, and the tool boxes and any reference materials on the other (and any chat windows and the like 🙂 ) I don’t know how I used a computer with on monitor 🙂

I use Dell’s at work and they are pretty good, I’ve only known one out of maybe 30 have a problem, which is pretty good average. and Dell fixed the one dodgy one in about 24 hours which isn’t half bad given there’s a contract company doing the intermediate support/collection. the other thing I like about dells is that they are pretty quite, lots of computers are fairly noisy where a dell is usualy almost silent.

for gfx your best off with a normal CRT monitor, but if you’re looking for something to do a lot of text based things on, like finances/web browsing then I think I’d recomend spending the extra for a flat pannel monitor cos they are much easier on the eyes. (personaly I use the CRT for gfx work as well, but I’ve heard that the real conisurs prefer the colour of a CRT to a flat pannel, where I prefer the nicer image that dosn’t flicker on a flat pannel.)

not sure how much all that helps, but it’s just my 2p worth since, I’m passing 🙂

IF you thought your New dell was cheap, I have a pal who can supply Dell Pc’s direct to your door from dell at cheaper prices than you can buy them at their website.

Only problem is that it has to be full cash upfront.

just supplied a P4 2.0 with 17″ monitor, 256mB, DVD/Writer combo, combined lexmark printer scanner, etc etc, with next business day onsite 3yr warranty for £850. pretty good I thought.

In My experience, we used to run several dual monitor pc’s in my last company, you have a dual output video card in your PC and cable up both monitors seperately.

The monitors and then software driven to almost any configuration you like, we always had ours set to a widscreen type format so your start button was on the bottom left of the left monitor and the clock was on the bottom right of the right one. the mouse cursor would just jump from one to the next as could you drag open windows between monitors at ease.
