    Hi,

Does anyone own a Pacer Compact Series CNC Router?

I have a chance to buy one for £7500, its a few Years old but It looks in pretty good nick. Mainly used for MDF Woodworking.

Is there anything I should look out for? Any known problems with this model?
Is it priced about right? What should I offer?

Its a big purchase for me and I would like to get it right the first time at this price.

    Thanks for the input.

just my ersonal opinion, but i found pacer routers overpriced when i looked into uying a router. i have heard they are great routers but i just couldnt justify what i got for money as oppossed to the axyz router i bought.
if you have the cash, consider the axyz or perhaps the shopbot.com routers.

you mention mdf as the main material you plan using, can i ask why that is… or should i say what is it you will be using the mdf for?

Rob Mate, we’re talking second hand here, and the price is specified….
    no question about affordability,

Are you sure you dont need a holiday? And I mean that in the best possible way 😀

    :lol1: hi peter… honest I’m fine mate… :lol1:

i know the price is specified, but new or used, i think the pacer is over priced in the first place. like i said i did look at them.
what i mean is… if i had 7k to spend i would look at a second hand axyz or possible a new shop-bot because they cost much less than the pacer new. you would certainly get a bigger bed size etc for the same money i would think. AXYZ actauly do refurbed/used machines and very often they have great offers on the go as i looked at moving to a 3m x 2m a few months back.
on another note… you can buy new graphtec routers for under 7k with various bed sizes. etc etc

Sorry, I don’t intend to cut MDf but the current owner is using it to make kiddies toys and furniture in MDF. I was basically highlighting the current occupation of the router.

I forgot to mention that the Router is complete with PC System and software.

I intend to cut mainly Acrylic, Di-bond, and Foam-ex type materials.

In your "valued" opinions, I have never used any type of CNC machine. I have neither used a Hand Router! BUT I;m very computer literate (Computing background from Previous Job). I am also very Software "literate" ( I can generally grasp the idea, quickly) With this in mind How long before I am "verse" to routing without hiccups? It may seen a daft question. But I’m trying to gauge the "climb Gradient" on the CNC Learning curve!

It took me a couple of days to learn how to plot/cut efficiently on my Summa D750.

CAN I ASK HOW MANY OF OUR FELLOW SIGN MAKERS USE A PACER. (just as a matter of interest)

well we bought an old AXYZ in the end… we had 3 months warranty deal with it and now it is working very well, we had to use the 3 months to get them to fine tune it and so forth.

AXYZ are very aware of the value of second hand routers and they do actually strip a lot back to the bare shell, the last thing they want is problems with a second hand machine. Our one had new electrics, reconditioned spindles (2 heads), new drive motors, new racks, re-did the suction bed and a new vacuum. I have admit it felt like buying a new machine!

Buying new one was out of the question but certainly worth talking to AXYZ and they are setup as no-nonsense company, they have stuck to their commitments and have helped us out but I have to admit that I was keen to import a router and my colleague really wanted the support aspect, I am pleased we didn’t and we got the one we have now.

karl, what sort of plans do you have for the machine?
i.e. how do you intend making it pay for itself mate?

Well Robert, at the moment I am using a local guy for routing, I can’t grumble at the price he is charging me, but because he’s a sign maker in his own right, and he’s a busy sign maker at that, I can’t insist that my jobs get cut on time. I can’t remeber a time when I got it done on time. hence, At least this way I can take charge.

On a financial note, It might take me a couple of years to pay for its self, this does not include all the additional work I will be able to put through it ie, cutting for other independat sign makers, adhoc cnc services.

What do you think? sound judgement or am I trying to skate on thin ice!

don’t do it the pacer is a poor poor machine and a poor company i have had one which was plagued with problems then a they replaced it and the second was no better to be quite honest its a hobby machine

also the pacer software is only a cam package you cannot draw this must be done on other software
