  • Does anyone know of any suppliers of bronze sheet?

We need to engrave a new sign onto bronze.

We’ve ordered a sheet of bronze and it’s been delivered and it looks
like copper. This isn’t going to match what is currently on site.

Now we were under the impression that bronze is of course a brown colour ??

Does anyone know of any suppliers of bronze sheet.
We need it 1.5mm thick, and of course Bronze colour not Copper. :lol1:

I always thought bronze was browny because of aging. Is the thing you are matching to old and tarnished/oxidised?

It’s a bronze door, so i think it’s quite old.

I don’t think we’ll be able to match it exactly, but the sheet this
company have supplied is going to stand out like a sore thumb. 😕

They’re not being very helpful at helping us out. 😥

Maybe worth trying a local restorer, an old hand will prob be able to tell you how to age the Bronze with something like cold tea or some such old trick.

The word you are looking for is "Patina" the bronze takes on this patina with age. If the customer is fussy maybe you could try a reclaimers yard and see if they have some old stuff lying around otherwise he will have to wait a bit.

Had the same problem when I did a memorial plaque for the council.

They specified bronze and we were surprised when the bright new sign plate arrived from our engravers looking like copper, which is the appearance of bronze before it starts to oxidize and slowly turns brown.
(just like a new 2 pence piece compared to an old, used 2 pence piece)

There is a product that you can buy in good DIY and hobby shops that chemically ages the look of the metal, and is used to give brass and bronze an ‘anitque’ look.

The product is by Liberon who make wood finishing products, and you wipe it onto the surface of the metal and it darkens down the colour of the metal.

I would recommend you test this out before committing yourself but I’m fairly confident that you’d be able to gradually change the colour of the bronze to match in with what’s already there.

The bronze can be aged by dipping in very hot oil, last time we had this done it was a place in Birmingham, I think Engravamet will know who does this.
The plate needs to be at least 2.0/3.0mm thick because the heat will warp 1.5mm thick.

    some good advice …. cheers.

We’ve gone down the ‘Tourmaline’ route at the moment.
    Fingers crossed it works ok.
Not looking forward to when they want an update !! :lol1:
