does anyone know of a product to weld banners?
Posted by Tim Hobbs on July 28, 2009 at 10:58 amHi Guys
Does anyone know of a good product to chemically weld the seams on banners?
I read about a product called HH-66 which looks just the ticket but I can’t seem to find a supplier this side of the pond so that I can try a bit.Cheers

Shame that. There’s a place in Nottingham that weld banners and sometimes do them the same day.

Never mind mate thanks anyway.
No, we have a firm fairly local that will sew them for us, but I am particularly interested in seaming them myself and being a useless male have no penchant for the sewing machine!
As I said, I saw this article on the web for this HH-66 stuff which looks good. Just can’t seem to find it or a similar product in the UK. At least from efforts via google. -
I had an emergency with a banner hem and used VHB tape in a pinch.
And it worked!

Thanks Jill
Trouble with that stuff is it is so expensive.
I think that it is gonna have to be the old sewing machine. -
Cherwells do a great general purpose d/s tape.
(1" ‘gold’ backing)
About £8 for a 50m roll. Been using it for a couple of years – bonds banners very, very well.
Tried stitching ages ago – but to be honest, it just created a stress point / perforation to tear along.
The thought of chemically welding a PVC banner is a good one.
What about plumbers PVC pipe bond…melts it like crazy and goes ‘off’ without any residue and very quickly.

Thanks Guys
We will try the tapes, we have used them in the past.
The main reason that we want them nice and strong is for scaffold banners.
I just can’t bring myself to trust double sided tape. This is the link to the article that I read:
http://www.signindustry.com/banners/art … Part2.php3The plumber’s stuff sound good Dave but I guess the problem would be the quantity that you would have to use in such small tubes.

Hi Tim
I had the same problem in Cornwall there is no chance of getting a banner welded quickly, at the time I had a plumber removing some old pipework from the workshop he gave me a pot of Polypipe solvent cement it works like a dream and it is easily available from any plumbers merchants at £5.00 a Small pot and lasts for ages. Just remember to use with the door open as it is a bit smelly.

I have posted b4 about this. We have had all the same trials and tribulations with DS tapes and hem tapes. In the end we purchased a RF welder, best thing we have purchased for banners. Quick and east to use and gives you far more fabrication possibilities. Got ours from www ttfltd co uk. If you are doing a reasonable amount of banners it will pay for itself in no time. Just watch out for the RF burns they really hurt and they are an occupational hazard according to the engineer.
