does anyone know anything about 3d scanners?

Any one here know anything about 3D scanners I am assuming some of you with routers might use one. If so what do you think of the idea of the gadget for actual real life work.
I ain’t buying just interested in what other know/think about it.

Last year I visited Alton Towers. They had a system in place where you could sit in front of a scanner and have a 3d scan taken of someones head and shoulders. The result was etched into a block of clear glass. My children had the portraits done this way and the result was amazing. A block of glass with a 3d image of their faces etched into the block.
I think these things are amazing. A good business opprtunity with lots of uses for making prototype objects and highly detailed replicas.
If I had some spare cash I would buy one just to play with it 😀

I have seen those glass block things, love to have the machine to mess with. I have never actually seen one of those machines for sale, must cost a bomb.
