  • Does anyone a disc that will import vehicle outlines?

Posted by Glen Cordner on December 26, 2005 at 7:17 pm

I have a cutter that has artcut 6 software but I dont seem to be able to import vehicle silhouettes into it for sign writing. I also have Signlab 5 loaded on the computer but cannot get it to rum with my cutter (which came with Artcut 6). Does anyone know of a disc that with the vehicle outlines on that will allow me to import into artcut 6? I believe it is an EPS file I need (although Im not sure what that is all about!). I look forward to someones reply soon as Im now desperate to get cutting, this is now my second machine I have tried and now seem to think it is a software issue, however I desperately need a vehicle disc to use with this machine. Many thanks, Regards Glen.

    Glen,
Impacts outlines will open directly with signlab. they are in cdl as well as eps/ai
What make of cutter do you have, Signlab will possibly have a driver for it.

CDL is a cadlink file.(signlab) copy them to your hard disc, then use the clip art setup to open/import them, you can just drag and drop though,

The cutter I have is a Katana the driver I use from Artcut 6 is the Hengxing 720. I can get my vehicle outlines into Signlab 5, but am unable to get Signlab 5 to run the Katana. Im sure in the distant past I was told to set up signlab for HPGL, but there are several HPGL options on there and none seem to work. In an ideal world an EPS file that I can put into Artcut would be fine, in an even better world if I dould get Sign lab to work….Then Brilliant.

I’m almost certain that sl 5 will export as an eps or ai.
I am on 7 now, but dont think there has been much change in the export files.

Ask the cutter driver question on the Signlab forum, the guys from Cadlink regularly answer and thats if no one else knows. You will have to register though.

Im not exactly up to speed on these PC thingys, I have tried but have not had any joy trying to import to and from clip art. I will get onto the manafacturers and see if they know which driver will run my machine from signlab. I am still appreciating the suggestions though, and willing to try most. regards Glen.

I use corel draw to import eps/ ai files into and then once i’m happy with the sizing then i export them from there into a hpgl (.plt) file format, thats the one artcut seems to like very well. Open up artcut and choose import, change selection for file types so it browses for a .plt file and browse for your .plt file that you exported in signlab. one thing i noticed is that i had to export a quite big size as when you import it in artcut it places the file on the top left page border and you have to zoom right in to find it and drag the corner of it to make it bigger. Flexi will let you do this so i’m sure signlab will let you do this as well. i think thats the best way unless cadlink will write you a special driver for that cutter. i couldn’t get flexi or signlab make the cutter cut even with the standard hpgl or dmpl drivers that came with the software. I think that these chinese cutters only like artcut software.

Hello again Alex, hope all is well, obviously as you can see i am still struggling on with these vehicle outlines. Im still trying to source a disc with them in esp format and hoping that they will go straight in. Ive had no joy as yet trying to transfer anything (but then you know Im not the best with the PC). So I will continue to plug away and try to sort something if at all poss. Hope all went well for you over the xmas and good luck in 2006 Regards Glen.

I don’t think you will get any Vehicle Outlines to import into Artcut. Ours will import but you will lose the colour information. The problem is with Artcut’s import filters not the outlines themselves.

If you have a legit version of Signlab I would use that. The program is infinately better than Artcut. If it is legit (ie has a dongle) any Cadlink dealer (including us) would probably help you to get the cutter up & running.

Im not even sure waht a dongle is? I have been given a copy of Signlab 5 and that is about all I know apart from the bloke I got it from is using it, other than that (well who knows). Regards Glen.

Glen, if you dont know what a dongle is, your copy is a pirate.
If you dont buy legit you dont get the support.
so all you can do is ask artcut or the plotter maker for help.

A dongle is a security device, it will plug into your parrallel or usb port. If you don’t have one then you may have a cracked copy. Not good 😕 Best not to announce it on a public forum 😮

Did the Artcut come with the plotter? can you get the outlines to go in at all?

What outlines are they? are they copies too? or have you bought some?

I certainly dont have anything to plug into the back of my PC (could it be the bloke still has it?) if so I presume he needs it in which case what he has given me is useless. The Artcut did come with the cutter I can design on that OK and I can import some Logos from a disc I bought, but the outlines of the vehicles were part of what I was given (presumably) to work with this Sign lab which appears to be missing a bit (the dongle as you you put it). I would love to be able to buy the disc with Vehicle outlines on it so that I could simply import into Artcut, but dont know where or what I would be looking for. I am guessing it would be an EPS file of vehicle layouts (simply because my Logos disc which I can import from is EPS). So any info is still being gratefully received and sought after, at least NOW i know I am wasting my time with the Signlab, that has baffled me since before Christmas, I have spent hours trying to import from one thing or the other. Many thanks, all ideas welcome, Regards Glen.

Our Vehicle Outlines will import into Artcut, as I said albeit without the colours. But you will get the outlines to import.

Artcut won’t import any outlines properly, it’s a problem with the software not the outlines. So I wouldn’t waste much more time trying.

A better option maybe for you to buy a copy of Corel Draw. It will import MUCH more easily & reliably than Artcut. You will find older versions are very cheap. If you do that & buy some original outlines then you will be up & running very quickly.

I REALLY appreciate the help on this and you have probably saved me days of grief, (not wishing to take advantage) but whre can I get the Corel draw and the outlines at the best price, or is it really a case of searching about. Regards Glen.

Glen, if I were you I would 1st become a paid up UKSB member. You can then get our Vehicle Outlines with 20% discount. You will also find people are keener to help as you have put something back into the site.

You can find something such as Corel 12 on ebay for around £70. Just check that the item is legitimate, there seem to be a few that are on there at the moment. Even older versions will probably be fine to start with & even cheaper. Just put “Corel Draw” in the ebay search & take a look…

think i just seen the corel on ebay that u refered too… becareful that it is the “real thing” and not another pirate CD.

    http://www.corel.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3Uk/Products/Display&pfid=1047024670787&pid=1047023032901

The above is a link to Corel online, you see a button called “Try”, if you have broadband, download it and give it a whirl.

Our offices are kitted out with Corel, really good program and certainly display Brians CD’s the way he intended it.

SignLab is a good program, it is dongle protected is its value is in the £1000s. Have experimented on a router once with SignLab and if dongle is not present it will either start in demo mode or allow you 5 clicks before it exits. The important thing is to get good with designing with a good bit of software and then work from there.
