Do you laminate contravsion?
Posted by Jeff on April 27, 2022 at 1:12 pmDoes everyone laminate their controvision?
If you do, do you use optically clear laminate?i need to print windows and fit. but i would rather laminate them for the print protection but if i can only use optically clear its another cost and another material i need to get in for the job, just for my own peace of mind.
i can pass the cost to the customer, but i didn’t think about it till now and they have already agreed on the price a couple of weeks ago. so now I’m doing the job i think i have shot myself in the foot! 🤔Joe Killeen replied 9 months ago 7 Members · 7 Replies -

Hi jeff,
If its going outside then 100% yes. If its internal then no.
If you laminate then yes you need to use optical clear and i also recommend going around with some clear mastic to seal the edges. Outside only obviously

we have done both.
we only laminate if its on a vehicle but from memory we did not use optically clear.

If you laminate with standard (non-optical clear) it will work, but will add a ‘haze’ to the fitted job – will not be completely see through due to the adhesive

I always use it unlaminated for interior work unless it’s subject to being cleaned or defaced.
If it is on a vehicle short term, I would give the customer the option of lamination or it will get dirty easily or fade fast.
However, we have some customers that do not mind the lamination being a regular laminate, rather than optically clear. But keep in mind that some laminates are much better than others with regard to how clear they are.
However, I am in no way saying they are “clear!” I have seen some very good, but also some bad examples to the point its like looking through a clear plastic bag! 🤨
all this said You are not going to get better clarity and protection than an optically clear laminate!Something to consider and it’s easily made up and you will use it time and time again.
Ask your supplier for an A5 sample of the optically clear laminate.
Print an A3 of controvision and stick it to some clear acrylic.
Now laminate by hand, the A5 optically clear laminate.
Laminate by hand an A5 in your regular laminate
Mask off, and wipe an A5 section with a chemical and scratch it, showing deterioration.you now have a sample to show the customer the different things that can happen, and how they look when you hold them up to the window, depending on the laminate you use.

I always laminate contra-vision with ultra clear.
Laminating with normal clear laminate is a no go. Client will not be able to look outside his vehicle.
I almost never send non laminated print out of my store.

I like the sample idea rob, nice one mate.
for now i will give him the option of laminated and unlaminated and add a bit.
Does anyone know if i can buy a “part-roll” of the optically clear?
