  • Do we really need a census?

Posted by Peter Normington on March 8, 2011 at 9:31 pm

just got my form today, the questions asked don’t really convince me the census is necessary.
I did have a giggle at one question though,
"this question has been left intentionally blank"
    what do you think?

it’s currently under my table leg to stop it wobbling, i’ll prob fill it out when i have a spare week.

one of the neighbours was complaining that it was asking about salaries etc, not sure what that has to do with knowing who lives where etc.

the thing that gets me is that those who don’t want to be known will make sure they’re not counted, surely they’ve got most of the info anyways? like who earns what (tax records), who claims what (benefits, sprogs etc), illegals and those with reason to not be found will be off the radar before and after the census!

Hugh there are no questions related to finances or benefits unless i didn’t read it right.

More nonsense and "non work" for senseless bureaucrats in "non jobs" to plough through.

Rather then cut back on spending on defence and police – this useless survey should have been scrapped to save money

Under cheeky questions such as ethnic origin and religion I will be answering "Earthling" and "Yogic flyer" 😕

i not got it… but i am happy with the census… i use ancestry and have discovered relatives etc so i understand its important for that… but it doesn’t need to be advanced at all… just basic.

perhaps the guy who was moaning about it -thinking i was bothered- was being ironic and i missed it! i’ve not even opened it yet, just spent a couple of hours doing artwork etc which, should be more profitable than the census!

Dave, I agree that they’re handy for that but as a way to work out who / how many / where people are in the country, it’s flawed.

Just imagine how much its actually cost to print & mail these, along with the return post. I thought the whole country was supposed to be in cost cutting mode – what a total waste of tax payers money.

Could we not have been asked to do this online before the thing crashed through our letterbox.

Don’t forget guys and gals, they don’t want you to fill in the form until the 27th March this is important as they need to know the whereabouts of everybody on that particular day.
As it’s my wife’s birthday there will be between 30 -40 people in our house and we need to put down their full names, sex and date of birth 😮 😮 😮
I’m sure all those people will be happy to divulge that information to me or the wife.
Question 17 WHY????? why put it there if there is no question 😮 😮 😮 😮
It’s reported that this census will cost up to £400 million 🙁 🙁 🙁 but at least it will keep more pen pushers in work for the next ten years.

its the 27th or any time soon after that date – it doesn’t have to be filled in on that specific date, just not before it.

I agree with Dave my wife’s hobby is tracing her family tree and without census records it would nigh on be impossible to tack back 😕

I haven’t seen it yet but I do have a wobbly table so it would come in handy :lol1: Would have to agree that they probably have all the info they need already and those that want to stay under the radar will just file it away (hope it’s bio degradable paper).

I’m pretty sure people like the police and nurses would tell you that 400 million could be better spent, if they have said that’s what it is going to cost then you can at least triple that to get a final total.
