  • do i leave my rockhopper powered on all the time?

    Hi all

Im new in to the printing and have been looking around the forum a lot recently.

From what I’m reading it seems like you all leave you printers turned on.
I have bought a rockhoppper 2 about 9 – 10 weeks ago. Its 3 years old and running 3rd party inks. When i bought it the guy said he would change to the original inks if he was to keep it. He said it needs a new head and will need them every 8 months. I have put a new head in and only uses about 1/3 of the nozzles. Even doing 10 full cleans the heads not much better. If i left it turned on would this stop my problem of it drying up.

    any help much appreciated

    Thanks
    Adam

Unlike aqueous printers, solvent printers use a more volatile ink. Volatile solvent inks evaporate much more quickly that water based inks. I can leave my water based HP 3000CP printer for weeks unused and switched off and still expect it to crank back into top gear very quickly. If I did that with my JV3 then I’d be looking at a new set of heads, at least. A solvent printer needs to be able to self clean daily, ie: needs power.

Sounds like your new head is either defective or there is ink starvation. I would replace the damper and do a fill up and a nozzle wash.

    Thanks for the reply bob

I have replaced the damper and done a fill up and a nozzle wash. But still no different .

What about cleaning them with some head cleaner to unblock the nozzles

    Thanks

If you’re getting 1/3 of the nozzles out on a new head something doesn’t sound right. I think you need to determine whether the problem is with the head (or possibly the driver board/cable) or whether it’s an ink supply problem. Try swapping cables between the dodgy head and a colour that’s working OK. Try switching ink (swap dampers) between the dodgy head and a colour that’s working OK. Are the pumps working OK? If it turns out that you are in fact dealing with dried and blocked nozzles, try soaking the head for an hour or more. Failing that, I would try a manual head flush.

The best way is to follow the recommended procedure for your printer.
