Display board …which type advice?
Posted by Cheryl Smith on January 28, 2013 at 9:14 amHi there
I have a short term exhibition job in a Library. The walls are pretty bumpy and hairy from continued use by exhibitors…The Client initially wanted stickers to go straight onto wall…but this would look sketch..
The longest piece would be 20ft by 4ft.
I thought of using 3mm foamex but am concerned as to how to fix it to the wall, along with buckling, expecially as the pieces would have to butt-up to each other..because of the weight of the boards, I wondered if fhb tape would do it….I will also have to flood coat the image onto the board because of time constraints.
I considered also correx as its cheap and lighter but we would see the flutes …
anybody with experience in this area?
I would be really greatful of advice….and would sleep better.
regards

looks interesting Jon….thankyou
would anyone know of a trade supplier of this? -
It’s very light but it is hard to fit vinyl on to unless you’re using a laminator or similar.
Think I would be inclined to go with foamex and double sided tape.

KIN NORA….
You have to buy a blinking great big box of 18…only want ten…
I am inclined to be concerned as Jon says (thank you)…
Ive think ive decided to go with 3mm foamex and use Velcro…which I am lead to believe is much cheaper than vhb tape….
happy days -
I’ve use 3mm foamex and velcro for short term display and it’s worked fine, use plenty of velcro as it’ll need the adhesive area to get a good enough hold on the wall.

What about printing onto banner pvc and don’t put any eyelets in it.

Mikes beat me to it, 😀
I did a banner for a big shopping mall some years ago, and i have the very same in my reception area right now.buy tile batons from local timer merchant.
its cheap 1 inch x .5 inch wood straps (non-dressed)
Screw it directly to the wall horizontally. even if the walls 40ft long, just butt joining the batons in a line.
4ft below the top line of batons, repeat below.
all you need is a cordless drill and spirit level.
along the top of the batons.
staple a printed/letter banner all the way along, keeping it taught.
you will now have 40ft of banner hanging .
now take the bottom of the banner and whilst tugging downwards, staple along the underside of the bottom banner all the way along.
dont over pull on it or you will create tension lines.
using a stanley knife, trim back any over laps of banner.
you should be left with a seamless 40ft by 4ft sign/display looking great and cheap to make.as i said, i did one about 10ft deep by 70 or 80 ft long maybe. all one piece, no joins and was on a curved wall too. looked great.
the wood straps allow you to tension it and hide any sort of wall imperfection to give a smooth flat finish. -
sound like a fine idea!…never even gave it a thought..
I dont suppose you have a pic of what you did?
Thanks everso much…Ill do some number crunching…but it certainly sounds less laborious ….! -
I don’t have any pictures at hand Cheryl sorry. but… here is an OLD picture
of our reception before we changed it.if you look at the back illuminated wall, this is done exactly the same way as i have mentioned.
the only difference is i have used "back-lit" banner material.
on the wall a foot or so back behind the banner we screwed 6 fluorescent lights to illuminate it.
the only fixings the whole thing has is around the edges.
the dark vertical bands are joins in the banner using only banner hemming tape.
we have since changed the design, but same method etc as listed.
click link for images, hope this help.

Cheryl,
I’ve always wanted to do a job which could use this system, SpiritFlex, looks a good method if you can persuade the client. Not much good for short term because of the cost but you would always be able to provide the banner service so a good investment for them maybe. -
Hi Cheryl
A slim frame with textile print would sort this out, silicone keder fitted to the edge of the print simply pushes into the frame edge and stretches as it goes in. Obviously the textile would be joint free and easy to change so additional prints in the future could get you repeat business. There are several systems on the market that could do this for you.
Cheers Paul
