  • Discount purchases at SignUK, whats your plans?

Posted by Robert Lambie on March 22, 2007 at 8:34 pm

As SignUK is just around the corner I wanted to ask if anyone is planning on making any purchases at the show?
I think with the amount of discounts some suppliers give it is daft not to consider buying that bit earlier to take advantage on these savings. I was speaking to Andrew today at work and we where thinking about what kit would be worth considering/looking at, at this years show?

I personally think we maybe a bit premature on a UV flatbed printer. But then thought maybe a wide solvent printer around 110” – 120” wide… from there I jumped to a wall saw and back again. I don’t mention these machines randomly; I am seriously looking for ways to speed up what we already do, as opposed to getting into something new.

Last year at the show we bought an Excalibur and corner rounder, nothing big granted… but we did get discounts and both get used on a daily basis now… so certainly wasn’t a bad purchase.

Does anyone have any good knowledge or heard good reports on flatbed printers or perhaps wide printers like I have mentioned?

Does anyone else have products they are attending the show purposely to look at?

    Thank you for any replies….

    .

Last year i bought my cadet, it was a nightmare getting it on the plane on the way back up though….

Seriously I’m looking for a laminator/poss ezy taper and some form of bench based cutting machine ie practik bar etc (if anyone is selling an old one I’m your man!!!).

It was actually a good day out at Sign UK last year, I went on the last day and got 2k off the price of the machine so was very happy.

we saved allot of money the year prior. we bought or grenadier, laminator and software from B&P. we saved a bit on the bundle but got loads of ink added to the deal… so the saving was very good indeed.

same last year, on Excalibur and corner round. got that from JAG supplies.
as you said, if for nothing else than the discounts its well worth the visit.

Try attend day 2 and meet the rest of us from the boards. we are all staying overnight for a bit of a bevvy session and meal… 😉 (if you fancy coming along email admin@uksignboards.com) Not forgetting Kate is giving away her drinks to anyone on the grafityp stand. 😉 :lol1: sorry kate. 😀

i’m hoping to get up to the show, but am not sure yet, things right now have just (finally) got pretty busy for me, i’m not sure if it’s just a spurt of action, or if it’ll continue, but hopefully i’ll save a few bob from the jobs and might be looking for an eyelet press (now i’ve seen how easy it is to make my own banners !) and a corner rounder, both things i could use a fair bit, i’m also considering doing some subli stuff, t-shirts, mugs etc, just things i could sell as extra’s when dealing with plumbers, builders etc, all depends on money of course !

i’d love to walk out with a good deal on a printer and laminator, but until i get another 600sq ft, that’s just a bit of a dream ! well… a financial impossbility right now too !

what is the main day that people are meeting up ? i doubt i’ll be able to stay over, although it’s not impossible !

Marcella, where do you get flites for that price I went into a travel shop and it was a lot more than that.
but then i would have to get to the airport and back as well so i will have to see if there is a bus or something.

Jason, I booked it through http://www.flybe.com. That’s who I flew with last year too. The prices vary depending on when you book. But there are still free flights available going down on 2nd May. I’m only paying the airport taxes …………. flights are free 😉

jason the stuff on offer can be negotiated, also you will get all the product samples and freebies you will ever need.

As I said earlier i save 2k on my machine, had I not gone I would have ordered the ame machine 2weeks later for the full price as i couldnt find a better price anywhere.

well worth it to be honest. That said I don’t think I can make it this year.

    cheers

Dont no where you are Dave so dont no if that is good or bad but Marcella is in Scotland like me so bit easier to judge price.

I was thinking about asking someone else but it will be very difficult for us both to go so maybe best for one of us to go and tell the other one latter.

i hadn’t thought about flying, but then again, i’m nearly an hour from gatwick, i’d need a lift there and back, and time i get there, go thru the booking in, and fly up, i could’ve driven most of the 4hr drive ! (make it 6 in the lucida !)

if your after a graphtec stick with UKSG discounts Alistair… 😉
speak to Phil Kneal on the Graphtec stand or Neal Roberts.

I have yet to decide on what… but getting more interested in UV printer, possibly flat bed, just think we are still maybe a bit premature for a flat bed…

i will probably come back with a new squeegee. 🙄 :lol1:

I will be looking at UV this year also. More and more frequently, I am being asked if i do direct to substrate.

I am eager to view the oce arizona, I am interested to see this vario – dot technology.

Does anybody know if the new colorspan machines will be there, I know Robert Horne are going to start supplying them shortly, but might not be in time.

regardless if a new machine is on the go, as long as it is a graphtec machine listed or not in the uksg section, you will be able to buy it as a uksg member and gain the proper discounts.

I/We/UKSB do NOT sell any kit via UKSB, all deals are direct with the suppliers but UKSG membership must first be confirmed via the members area or by myself. i.e. calling saying your a member will not work. it must be confirmed that you actually are mate.
any discounts on used goods in the online shop area of this site are also dealt with direct with the suppliers and also come usual support etc

I was just talking about this with Alison the other day. Our cutter is 11 years old and is starting to show it’s age. The tracking isn’t what it used to be so I think we might have a serious look at cutters with a view to buying an up to date replacement.

Another thing that I would love to have is a proper wall saw. I use a cutting table which has to be pulled out every time I need to cut a board. It takes me longer to set the thing up and tidy up afterwards than it takes to cut half a dozen sheets. I really do think a proper wall saw would increase our productivity so I will be taking a serious look at these if there are any at the show.

  • Martin Pearson

    Member

Phill, what do you normally use it to cut? Just that you might be better with something like the excalibur as there is no mess. I found my wall saw to be a very handy bit of equipment but it made a lot of mess and the hoover bit never seemed to do much of a job.

  • Phill Fenton

    Member

Not sure about the excalibur Martin. Will it cut Dibond? I agree about the mess – I use a table saw which produces a lot of dust (and is what takes all the time to clear up). I thought with a wall saw I might have less of a dust problem if it’s fitted with a vacuum system?

That said – I’ll take a good look at the likes of the excalibur to see if it will do the job I need – I want to be able to cut 10 x 5 sheets as well (length ways as well as width ways).

  • Martin Pearson

    Member
    April 8, 2007 at 10:08 pm

I think it does cut 3mm di-bond, I could cut 10 x 5s with mine but just remember you need to keep a lot of wall space clear with the cheaper type of wall saw like I had where you fed the board through a fixed saw.

We’re going to the show but don’t intend to buy anything but just to look what’s avai;able and what’s new. There is nothing worse than quoting on a job and then the customer says they have been quoted for such and such a thing that you have never heard of. Bought a case two years ago that has LED’s in with halo effect stainless letters in, great marketing tool.

Phill, i would have to suggest a guillotine. we purchased a second hand foot operated one about 10 years ago at 4 foot wide. couldnt be without it… we then bought another "second hand" electric 10ft wide one about 8 years ago. again, could not be without it. one press of a button (using your foot) and a 10ft x 5ft sheet of dibond is cut in 1 second perfectly, everytime. doesn’t matter what size it is, it cuts it… cuts stainless steel, steel, dibond, hips plastic etc it wont do foamex or perspex of course. we bought and excaliber last year, and although very good bits of kit, i have mixed opinions on them. i dont use it enough day to day to comment fairly on them though…
end of the day, you will get a very good "second user" guilotine for same price as a foamboard cutter.

  • Martin Pearson

    Member

Robert, I don’t think a guillotine is really an option for a lot of small sign companys. Although I agree with you it is an excellent tool for a lot of cutting jobs and is also a clean way of cutting substrates, its footprint is simply to large to fit in to most small workshops, Phill is looking for a wall saw because he doesn’t have a lot of space and a wall saw isn’t going to take up a huge part of his workshop.

  • Robert Lambie

i know what you mean martin, i guess it depends on the unit size but when we bought the first one we had, we only had a 1200 sq ft unit and that included the offices etc i guess if you went for an electric one that cuts 10ft wide you will need space for it. good point… 😕
