  • Dimensional Sign: Our Lawyer

Posted by Gary Johnson on November 14, 2012 at 3:14 am

The sign was created for a local community garden. My customer who was looking for "welcome" and "do not" type signs at the end of the meeting said with a big frown I have one more sign that our lawyer insists we place in the garden. As he read the blurb we both shook our head and thought, what has our world come to that we need a sign like this in a place that is supposed to be a refuge from the real world. After some thought, it occurred to me that that even though the message is depressing the sign didn’t have to be. I asked the customer if he wouldn’t mind if I made the sign playful so we could lighten up the message a bit. I imagined a lawyer with his hair grey from worry standing watch with his trusty power suit and tie doing battle against frivolous lawsuits. I’ve never met the actual lawyer but I am told it is a pretty good likeness. I named him Sy because it sounds like (sigh) and is short for Seymore. I thought that was appropriate because he sees more than the flowers and vegetables, he sees danger and in a weird way that kind of makes him a hero.

The panel is constructed of 30lb precision board carved with a Gerber D-200 Router using Enroute 4 software. The lawyer figure, the surrounding flowers, vegetables, and vines were sculpted from Abracadabra Sculpt Epoxy and painted with Sherman Williams latex paint. The border is inlayed black osmalto. The legal panel was constructed of 1/4" white acrylic painted black with the lettering incise carved.

Simply Superb!!! Nothing more to say

We would have to use something bomb proof with anti graffiti laminate to get the same message across in Wakefield.

Love it! I think most if not all signage of this nature should poke fun at itself, makes you smile and more than likely pay more attention to it!

Did you do sculpt the lawyer by hand? How long did that take? Worth the added time and care if you ask me 😀

Just saw this on the cover of Sign Builder yesterday.
    (the article is good too)
I wish more customers would let us be as creative as we can.
I love doing epoxy stuff, it’s like getting paid to play with Play-Doh.
    😀
    Nice work.
Have you ever looked into mold making to replicate these rather than the router route?
    Love….Jill

What is the epoxy? I thought it was made from a mould, but are you saying you can sculpt the epoxy directly?

Thanks for all the compliments, I was really fortunate to have a customer with a sense of humor!

To answer your questions: The lawyer figure was roughly sculpted out of HDU using an air powered die grinder. The details were added by applying an epoxy sculpting putty called Abracadabra Sculpt which is sold in Canada. In the US there is a similar product called Magic Sculpt that can be purchased on ebay. It is a great product with about a 1-2 hour window before it begins stiffening up. Within 12 hours, it is hard as a rock and can be easily sanded or scraped. It was a low budget charity project so I worked on it here and there for about 3 months. If I were to add together all the bits and pieces of time I spent, I would estimate that I spent a solid weeks worth of time on it. If you are interested, an article was written about the sign in Sign Builder Magazine,

There you will find some step by step pictures you may find interesting.

The nearest I have located is stuff called Magic Sculpt, available from a popular web side named after a river
