  • Digital Signage – a threat?

Posted by Jon Marshall on January 31, 2014 at 1:58 pm

Is anybody worried about the growing market for digital signage? I can see a point where the traditional shop sign is replaced by a digital screen. There are already some in the major shopping malls and it is a matter of time before they become cheap enough for your usual high street stores.

Not for a long time…it’s hard enough getting planning for signage, never mind glorified TV screens.

Can’t see it affecting me much to be fair, most of my local high streets are in rather rural & small town areas… Battle, Rye, Bexhill, Hailsham and surrounding villages, I can’t see any of them being turned into Time Square or a scene from Bladerunner!

I’m sure it will happen eventually, but when it does we will all be designing these
Layouts far more often, no point in having them unless they change message more regularly. Artwork charges will be expensive when that day comes. I know my customers would be pestering me daily for changes if they had one. Might even be nice to be able to change it remotely in comfort. Also, think of it as a rented sign
Rather than a one off purchase. Would sky be as big if you bought your subscription
Outright at the beginning instead of the monthly payment?
Don’t worry, we will always have a place in the industry.

Won’t the customer be able to make changes?

I know a few wannabe designers would try it for a while but if they’re anything like my customers they will just tell you what they want to say & leave the rest to the designer
"You know the sort of thing I like, can you just sort it out" hear this every day

Change is inevitable, as with everything not just our industry. The really successful entrepreneurs are the ones who acknowledge it, predict it and work with it instead of against it.

I’m a traditionally trained sign painter (mostly pub signs and the like) but it’s way too expensive to refurbish pub signs now, so I moved with the digital age and I’m still going….

Embrace change and use it to your advantage!

    Just Saying 😉
