Digital Print Room Build Thread
Posted by Jason Xuereb on June 18, 2009 at 6:05 amThought you guys would enjoy watching this take shape.
Got my steel today for the new print room and mezzanine floor level.
Also ordered the cleats to get done laser cnc and the purlins as on their way also. Concrete cutting guys coming in next week to reinforce the slab for the posts. Hopefully we can also get welding as of next week and get this up the week after.

Just waiting on the council and engineer to get it all approved. Then we are in business.
-
looks like it has millions of potential Jason, best of luck with it and look forward to seeing its progression mate.

Update: Got my purlins, cleats and printer. Aiming now for end of July to be up and running.
Was pretty lucky they all arrived at the same time and my very good neighbor let me borrow the forklift.
-
Small update. All the drilling for all the holes is done. Were getting the printer setup in the downstairs office for now. Isn’t totally ideal but we can start playing with the white ink.
Got all my plates delivered to supported the c channel as well.
Still aiming for the end of July to at least have the structure up and then finish the wiring etc.
-
Still going 😀 Got the council approval for the holes we had to cut out in the slab. Welding should be finished this week and we get the structure up next week. Dragging on a bit I guess this always happens.

That’s incredible Jason, well done on your success and great to see your progress.
cheers

Curious as to why you concrete the legs in Jason?
Over here, our mezzanine floors are bolted through base plates into the concrete slab.
Look forward to seeing more pics as it progresses.

Hey Chris. It has all to do with the permit down here. Because I only have 7.5 car spaces in my car park I am not allowed to have any more office space. So the extra space on the mezzanine level is considered storage space. This means it needs to take a load of 35 tonnes on the top. The engineer gave us the option of having really big metal plates on the bottom of the posts or putting them into the ground. I didn’t want the plates getting in the way (walking over them etc) so we went with putting them in the ground.
-
quote Gareth Lewis:7.5? Who’s the unlucky driver of the half a car?
Pretty sure 1.5 car spaces is for a disabled car space.
-
Aha! I just thought it was a bit odd, with the .5 of a space, but now makes perfect sense to a dullard like me.
Thrilling stuff watching this all take shape by the way.
Having knocked a couple of buildings about, I personally always found it a bit disappointing once the walls go up, being sort of shut in after being able to take an unspoilt-ish view of the outside from inside while the build takes place. Perhaps that’s what the person who built the first space with all glass walls thought too.

Been busy with work. But the timber frame is up. All the plaster is hung. The sparky has run his wires.
Blocking up the plaster tomorrow. Should have good progress made within a week.

Cheers Nic. That’s the main reason. We want to employee someone and systemise the business and have it totally organised.
We also wanted to create the most perfect environment we could for digital printing, storing digital media and out gassing of prints.

That’s great – looks almost as nice as my place! 😮
Will you be using the roof space as a mezzanine or storage area or is that a possible plan for the future?

We’ll use it for storage and layout out big banners for now. It’s been engineered to take 35 tones on the top. So 500kg per square metre.
Don’t really have any plans for it just wanted to build it properly cause you never know in the future what you’ll need. We plan on being in here for 5+ years.

Hey Shaun,
Down here the drop ceiling installed is about $25 a square metre. Australian dollars.
I don’t have an extraction fan in there yet I need to fit one. I just wasn’t quite sure how many times an hour I had to cycle the air. I am thinking of also have the extraction at floor level to remove the solvents from the room.
Pretty sure they are 36w double fittings and I’ve got 16 of them in the room on two circuits. I really like all the light it makes working in there a lot easier.
Anyone have any ideas on the air extraction requirements?
The two printers working at the same time can get heavy on the noise. I also want to keep the temperature constant as well.
-
Is that a big mirror in the middle of the room that reflects your 2 plotters? Or do you really have 4 of those 😮 😮
Congrats on a super room! :thumbup2: -
2 printers, 2 cutters and laminator in middle bart. 😉 :lol1:
we have 2 per room jason. one bringing in air from outside and one next to the printer sucking air out the room.
good point on the lower extractor for the solvent though as you obviously know solvent drops as its heavier than air. -
agree Jason, if you lighting is poor or incorrect colour it can play havok with how you work, but too much white light can take it’s strain on you.
good room mate… you sure sticker printing is your trade or building rooms now?
