Not had much experience with digital printing so any advice would be appreciated.

Customer would like colour logo with text on two clear glass signs.
The logo is too complex to cut in vinyl and the specified colours don’t seem to be available in any of the vinyl colour ranges anyway.

Would it be possible to digitally print on clear vinyl, and if so would the colours be solid and opaque enough for exterior use? 🙄

Depends on the printer, if it’s a normal inkjet then not on normal print settings, the ink will too transparent.

You can do it using overprint or ink saturation, I can’t remember the settings I used but I used the colour saturation in preference to the overprint in Colorip on a Cadet.
I found that overprint was making the prints blurred or not dark enough, the saturation allowed for fine tuning, even then though the finished result wasn’t exactly clear but mine were being viewed from the inside with the light shining through.

I print on to clear 3m or oracal, i buy the digital printing clear. Normaly i would put the ink up buy about 20-30% for the extra body to make it more visable. I only have a 4 colour printer so there are printers with white as well thats good for revers prints to back them up if you think you need that. A good look that i have don is to laminate your clear print on to etch vinyl helps to back it up and gives a good effect.

    Hi, Neil

I print normally onto clear vinyl (mirror image, of course!) and back with white vinyl. Use the same cut path used to cut the print for the white as well. Also had success screenprinting white to back the digi print clear. Screenprint first, then weed. Also tried spray painting white onto the clear, but does’nt work. The edges of the vinyl curls (most paints) or the paint comes off with the application tape (rest of the paints!)

If the logo is not too complex, and the job is worth it, you can just flood coat with white, and then cut out with jour NT cutter or swivel head knife. The edge of the contour cut clear gives you a nice guide for the knife blade.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for your help guys…….

Sounds like I’m going to need a different approach to this job,
as the glass signs are fixed to a wall so it’s not practical to bring the
signs back to the studio for screen-printing.

    🙂
