different type’s of materiel for a light box
Posted by Martin Gray on November 1, 2010 at 10:01 pmHello
Ive been asked to make 4 light box fascias double sided so 8 in total. In the past they have been made of what looks like 2mm white perspex sheets. is this a normal materiel? Plus the reason they are broken is because some little sh1ts have decided to throw stones at them!! yeah very festive! Is there been a better type of materiel? eg unbreakable! Cost more at the start but will save money in the long term! or am i doing myself out of future work here?
Thanks
Martin

Martin, they are normally done in opal acrylic, either 3mm or 5mm depending on the size but the option Ian has given you for opal polycarbonate would make them less likely to be broken.

Thanks Guys
The maximum thickness i could go would be 3mm i think! as they are existing light boxs. Also there are ones that are round circles! how easy is polycarbonate to cut? not easy i bet?!
Thanks

I order it pre-cut from my supplier for a nominal fee.
Whatever you do, kid, please make them a nicer looking layout.
That’s why I threw the rocks.

probably easier to cut than acrylic, you can get in 3mm also and should still stand up to the kids

Martin, most lightboxes are made to accept both 3mm and 5mm panels. They use the same framing or at least most manufacturers do.
As for cutting it is pretty easy to cut but you will need to cut slowly so as not to generate to much heat or it will stick itself back together behind the blade :lol1:
5mm would be better but as Gavin says you will probably get away with 3mm. Most suppliers will cut for you if you think there is going to be a problem cutting it.

Eh your not going to like me for this but i cant do anything about the layout or the fonts! there’s signs all around the town centre. so i been asked just to copy the old ones! They have been the same since i was a toot! some day i mite get the job of revamping them tho!Martin
I don’t think i would have a problem cutting them after reading the above posts its more of a time thing! Been sitting in a shed all year! now 2 weeks before they go up they come and see me! haha its always the same! Thanks

thats were your wrong, produce a new layout that blows them away, and then get the job of not only doing the ones you are, but all the old ones.

I wish i could! but Ive been handed this job from the electrician that puts them up. Any new layouts would probably have to go threw a committee!! = time something that we dont have!

That were your wrong again.
The hardest part is getting the contacts.
you’ve got it, the SPARK
He’ll give you the intro to the committee member to deal with, go from there,
you’ll never get the nice jobs without fighting for them, simple business.
Impress the business association, and surely you’ll impress all the business owners in the association, 😮

impress them further by removing all the loose stones from the area where box is fitted 😀
