    Hiya

What Ive been wondering is when your first asked to make a sign. what choice of materials do you normal use over others and why?. yes most times it comes down to the budget. but not always so if you where give in free choice what materials would you go for?

I make most of my signs out of ACM. as it does not warp like foam boards. but i see alot of people use acrylic.

Ive been asked to design a shop front with stand-off letters. the design i received was of white letters with quite a thick black outline so i priced up 3mm composite letters in black and would apply white vinyl of the top. but it started me thinking should i get the letters cut in black acrylic?

    I hope this makes sense!

Did a similar job to your spec.

Mine was a 1000mm diameter circle, stood off a wall, with white letters and white dashed line.

I went for ACP, for its strength, weight, and high gloss finish. for the lettering I went for 3mm white acrylic, again high gloss finish, no black edge around the letters you’d get if I’d used ACP, these were bonded directly to the circle.

The white dashed line I used white vinyl, because of cost.

Surprisingly cheap to get made (if you know where), the customer got a 3d sign, on budget, that will be the focal point of their office.

I use composite for every job I can, foam PVC and correx have their place. If I am not happy the sign will be suitable I won’t do it. Not worth the trouble when it eventually fails.

Had another customer with a stand off sign, and folded sign tray, we got the job for being cheaper, and because we used ACP. Another company insisted the only way was using steel… Which would be down the scrap yard within a week.
