  • Different Manufacturers of Vinyls what should i use?

With only a couple of years experience in this business, I would be interested in you experienced band on the vinyls from different manufacturers. 😡

Reason being that I have only used until now, Avery and more recently Aslan vinyls. In looking for photoluninscent vinyls I had reason to make contact out with Hexis and Europoint.

The rep from Hexis has left me details of his products which to me as a novice appear to compare specification-wise with Avery and Aslan products. However the price is substantially lower. (hot)

Being a sceptical lad, I ask myself why so much cheaper? Any of you guys who use Hexis products care to comment? I have always (to date) used the 7 year vinyls from my current suppliers for plotting with excellent results. My PC600 also seems to print well to the white or transparent ones too.

The lower price though from Hexis is certainly worth having if all else is equal. (:)

Any comments anyone? If you prefer to e-mail direct rather than post on the board its

We use Hexis for pretty much everything. Don’t understand all the fuss about Eurocal, I think the Hexis material is as good, if not better, and cheaper. Their Ecotac is exceptionally good considering the price.

not downing hexis in anyway.. im not a user so i wont!

obviously you dont take much interest in how a vinyl performs jon if the cost is going to sway you to what you buy.

why the fuss about europoint.. well they sell oracal as you know. probably one of the best calandar vinyls on the market today.. “did you know that?”
matter of opinion i guess… 🙄 but ide put my money were my mouth is any day!
the UKSG is a buying group. the largest in the UK we probably pay less than you for your cheap stuff & we get best stuff.

    we “DONT BUY CHEAP VINYLS”

Thats what all the fuss is about! 😉

I used to buy from 5 year vinyl from Hexis. I have now swapped over to orical. Buying only 751(7 year) material. The price diferance is minimal. But you are getting a 7 year vinyl.

I get reps ringing me up, and when I tell them the price I pay. They never ring me back again, they just can`t compete. Best way ever of getting them off the phone..

But its not the whole picture. Europoint, sell a number of other materials. All of which you get a discount. Foam board, thermal tapes, banners etc etc.

I find it a ball ache, when I have to order stuff from half a dozen suppliers. Paying £7-10 postage for each item. Better to get it all from 1 supplier.

ps. I get free delivery from Europoint….. 😛 😛 😛 😛 even when I order 5 metres of vinyl, costing me just £8.

I have used a number of different vinyls in the past but switched to oracal 751 a few years ago as I was convinced it was a better vinyl than others I had been using. Amongst other things I’ve found are that it weeds easier than some I’ve tried.

I switched to Oracal long before I joined the buying group and started to benefit from the discounted prices Rob has negotiated for the group.

This is an unbiased opinion from myself an end user who has no vested interest in promoting any particular goods or services. 😀

We recently tried Oracal 651 against the equivalent Hexis (Ecotac). The Oracal felt more ‘plasticy’ and not quite as easy to weed as the Hexis. The only thing I found better about it was the substrate.

We do care about the quality of the materials, which is why I’ve gone with Hexis over Multifix, Ritrama and a couple of others we’ve tried. Never had a problem with the Ecotac and have used it on jobs that some people would use cast with no comebacks or complaints.

How much is Oracal 751 per metre? I might give it a try.

I’ve been using Doro Tapes own, which has now been superseded by Aslan and I’ve found it to be fine. However……..

I done a quick fitting job for another sign company who use Hexis by the ton and the graphics they supplied peeled straight off the backing with no cling to the application tape and laid down a treat. Better application paper or better vinyl, I’m not sure?

Another contact who I done some cutting for found my vinyl more troublesome to weed? Is there really that much difference when it’s bought or does shelf life and temperature have more to do with how good it is?

I’m with my learned colleague from Tassie. Oracal is hard to find here, I used to use mainly Arlon Calon Now I’m switching more to Avery. In fact, thinking about it…I’ve never even seen a swatch of Oracal…Sad Huh?

I like the fact that you can download the colour swatches (Oracal) and use them in Corel.

I used to use APA vinyls, what a nightmare they are, switched over to oracal 651 long before the coming of the UKSG, had a few problems with weeding it, but it was more down to old blades on the plotter than anything else.

Once joining the UKSG I switched over to 751 and i love it, I have had some experiance of 851 and find it very flexible, but at the moment 751 gives all I need.

Oh and i use oracal 451 banner vinyl too!

    Hi Folks
Interesting stuff. Everyone has a different experience and choice. Oracal vinyls are my choice, from a printers viewpoint. – Whats that? Thermal Printers should consider the surface quality of the vinyl, printability doesn’t seem to register on the spec of the vinyls. Oracal is the best I’ve tested (printability angle) It would be usefull to have this info on the vinyl spec. rather than just life expectancy.
    Hi Becky:
Your comments re ‘One Stop Shop’ are on the nail and a great problem for me! You’re very lucky with free delivery from Europoint too. Their arch rival Robert Horne Group now charge and have a min. order charge! They seem to have chased a lot of small buyers to Europoint or others
Soon to make UKSG a ‘One Stop Shop’ Rob?
