  • Different brands of ‘air release / escape’ wrap vinyl

Posted by David McDonald on September 29, 2010 at 11:31 am

    Hi all

We have been using Oracal 3951 Air release but need to urgently switch to another brand.

Can anyone suggest an alternative product, cast white gloss wrap digi print with air release?

I’m aware of Hexpress HX100WG2 from Hexis and Avery 1005 via Spandex (how much??) – any others you think might be worth looking at?

    Cheers

BTW thanks to those who replied to my other post on acid etch supplies 😀

There’s an Imageperfect one from Spandex which is quite well priced.

David, not that it makes a lot of difference to me as I don’t print inhouse but why the need to change urgently??

Just so I can make a mental note if I need to buy in any printed graphics.

    Hi Martin

We had been using Oracal 3951 Rapid Air for non-recess wraps with excellent results but two full rolls in as many days were faulty and had to go back and I’ve vehicles waiting in the workshop, I understand that there was a batch problem and they won’t have fresh stock for 3 weeks. If the problem is corrected I’ll go back to it unless in the mean time I like the IJ180CV3 so much that I decide to stay with it and pay the higher price when the current offer ends – at the very least I’ll stock up whilst the current offer is on.

    Cheers

    Hi Carol

The IJ180cv3 is very good. I found is easier to stretch around wing mirrors than 3951RA but the air release doesn’t work as well as the 3951RA (although still very good). I also thought the look of the finished wrap was slightly better with 3951RA which looks just like paintwork whereas the 180 seems to a get a few more application marks in it – nothing serious at all though (may be its slightly softer material?).

Overall the I thought 180 handles slightly better – just felt easier and quicker to get on. The only thing I didn’t like about it was it is a little bit more ‘chewy’, Can’t think of a better way to describe it but it means that you can’t cut it well with anything but a brand new scalpel blade and not whilst its still warm. Not a major problem though.

Overall honours exactly even. I will continue to buy the cheapest of the two subject to my current bad batch problem on the 3951RA being sorted out. The current offer price is excellent on the 180.

    Cheers

    Hi

Would you think the ij180 or the 3951ra would cope with small recesses – i.e. renault trafic sides, or VW transporter sides as I have one of each to do in the next couple of weeks and it would make the job a lot easier as it is to be fitted at customers place 2 hours away! I normally use standard 3951 or ij380 for deeper recesses.

    thanks

    quote David McDonald:

No they aren’t really suitable, we experimented with the recesses on a new model Citroen Dispatch, which has similar depth to the recesses as the Trafic you mention. They just won’t stay in unless you heat the vinyl for so long and at such a high temperature it starts to damage the vinyl.

    Even the new IJ180 David?

    Hi Jon

Sorry, only tried the 3951RA, however, will be wrapping a Nemo tomorrow and as a test will try the IJ180 on the recesses on the back doors.

    Will post some results

    Hi Chris

I’m sure that is the case for 380 but its 180 that we are currently testing. Not had the pleasure of using 380 yet but intend to do so soon.

Thanks for the replies and I thought as much to be honest!

Yes the 380 is brilliant for deep recesses but I was hoping there was an easier option for slightly shallower recesses.

    never mind

    cheers

You will flat love the v3. It has just a little more tack than 180-c (initial tack) and contours very well without primer. Also with the v3, you do not see the air release pattern as with the 180-c. We even use it for simple box trucks now because of the labor time. More expensive than oracal but every penny worth the extra cost. We use a lot of oracal still, just not for wraps.
