  • dibond tray in one piece 4.33m long in one piece – unusual?

    Hi everyone and merry christmas!

I have just made up a dibond tray for a customer and took it down to put it up this morning.
For one reason or other we didn’t put it up and took it back to the shop, and had intended putting it up tomorrow.

The customer had a look at the sign (4330mm x 740mm folded tray in two sections) and he has just telephoned, querying as to why we made it in two pieces and not one.
I explained that most of this material comes in 2.5 or 3m sheets and had not seen any 5m sheets from any of my suppliers.
The customer seems to think it’s standard practice to have signs of this size in one piece without any joins.
As long as I’ve been doing signs, I’ve never come across this and having spoken to a couple of suppliers and trade suppliers, they say that a one piece sign of this size would be unusual and not the norm as the customer seems to think?

What do you think of this ?

    Cheers
    Joe

    Hi Joe
I`m with you on this one. I wouldn`t even have made the calls to the suppliers. I do however always tell the customer how many pieces the sign with be made up of when quoting the job.

Do you think he just might be trying it on tho??

    Cheers

He’s an @rse. How on earth does he expect you to produce a sign that size in one piece?

I agree with Garry – sound like a "try on" way of getting you to offer a reduction.

I would tell him any sign over 3m in length will have a join.

You can get 6 metre sheets of dibond but suppliers say they have to be imported from europe!!Lots of pennies then 🙄 😮

I always state that a panel will have joins in, on my quotes. Even so, it has never been commented on. Most people with a brain accept that materials are limited in size I think.

    Hi Fred,
Yea, I’ve heard about having 5m & 6m sheets but know they are special order and lots of money.

What I’m trying to get across to my customer is that joins in panels, be it dibond trays or perspex panels, are a fact of life in the sign industry but he seems to think all signs are one piece items 🙄

    Cheers

he must be thinking of flex face sign

when doing a design i show the joints on the proof, this way they know exactly where they are and if possible i hide them as much as possible behind a letter or something
