some times it`ll go on the weight of the parcel, other times, if its classed as an unoforodox(sp) shape, it`ll go on surface area.

Better to set up an account with a firm, as you`ll get better prices for delivery.

Ring the courier up, and give them the size, then shoulkd be able to give you a price.

But becarefull, as I was quoted £40 for a set of ladder bars over the phone, quoted the customer this figure, took them to the courier and was then quoted £100+

I use Business Post and they seem pretty good (in my area at least!) but I think it’s a bit of a lottery who you go with in the carrier business. If you’re sending stuff like 8’x4′ sheets you will need to pack extremely well to avoid damage in transit in my experience. If it’s a one off then for fragile stuff it might be worth looking at a man’n’van same day service which can be fairly reasonable cost wise.
I work from home and have Business Post collect every other day no problem but they do still put me on their “standard” tariff which means I have to pay about £12 per consignment up to 10kg, but I just pass it on the the customer so it’s no big issue 😉 plus they do a cheaper “maildoc” service for 500g and 1000g things that will go in their poly bags which is quite reasonable.
I have sent out 8’x4′ magnetic white boards with business post and they were pretty heavy but caused no problems with excess size charges.

See if there is a business in your area that uses a carrier regularly, I use a firm down the road so get his rate plus I,m helping him to increase his through put which helps to get him cheaper prices from the carrier.

If you use a courier, be careful, some like Citylink will charge extra for goods over 8ft! They then charge a huge amount more.

have you tried tnt? as becky suggested set up an account, but mention you have a largish item to be delivered, if you sign on he dotted line they will give you a blinding price for delivery of that item…and they give you a really good rate for the rest of the six months 😛 😛
