• Day Off……..

Posted by John Thomson on August 5, 2008 at 9:49 pm

I took a day off today and climbed Ben Nevis with my dog ‘Murphy’….just a bit of time to myself………..

Summit pic to prove we did it….excuse the sweat on the T shirt…….we went up in 3hrs 15mins and down in 2hrs 20mins…on the way up only 3 fell runners passed us 😀

It is a hard , hard climb……..relentless……according to the Garmin the accent was over 4000ft!

The summit is not a place to wander!

😀 A German tourist took the one of me with Murphy……the rest I took…..it was strange near the summit as the altitude meant there was no vegetation at all…only a little moss………a very surreal setting…..the strange thing is that I have an irrational fear of heights………so I really was facing some fears today

Murphy was fine…..going up was easy for him……..coming down took a bit more concentration…… the ‘scree’ ( loose rock ) meant we both had to concentrate………….

    he is fast asleep! 😀

This is one that we would like to do soon………we enjoy these walks so much that we set up a site http://www.extremedogwalking.com ( sorry Rob for the plug )to try and encourage people to actually ‘walk’ their dogs.

If you are into ‘bagging’ summits, there is a Corbett near the saddle before you drop back into the bowl towards the Loch. Then its a fantastic mild scramble up through the black spout. Best part is when to take a left into the gully and look back past the shear cliffs. You then have to climb through a jambed rock and head for the summit……honestly say its well worth it…..From memory the full circuit is 12-13 miles

You dont realise how lucky you are having places like that on your doorstep! 😀 😀

Looks great. Off to Wales for a long weekend with a Mallie crowd in a couple of weeks so might actually get to do some decent walks with the woofs too (hot)

Not my idea of a day off John.

But credit to you, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😀

A very good time John, I bet your dog enjoyed it. Not too sure about your choice of clothing, my old MLC Instructor would have had a fit if I’d turned up dressed in jeans and t shirt.
Never climbed ‘The Ben’, set off twice times to do winter accents but each time had to turn back because of conditions.

    Steve,

I went well prepared……..my rucksack contained my microfleece and full waterproofs, gaiters etc .I chose to climb in the t shirt simply because it was warm and I was climbing at a reasonable pace.

What was shocking was the number of people going up wearing trainers and I have to assume by the absense of a rucksack no food/water or any protective clothing never mind a map/compass etc…….no wonder people get into difficulty on the hills.

    Congratulations to both of you!
I have only seen Ben Nevis from the road. I can’t imagine climbing him.
The snow photo is particularly pretty.
    Thanks for sharing.

Pity there was no real view through the mist.

    Still an enviable experience.

Some nice pictures there John, it looks quite busy. You chose a good day I imagine sunny dry days are few and far between up there. Did you get a moment to sit all alone and take in the view with just the noise of the wind, it can be quite sobering.
One of the great Scottish climbers – Hamish MacInnes started training dogs for mountain search and rescue on Ben Nevis many years ago.

The very reason I went up Steve…..suddenly everything else is unimportant…….although it was very calm up there…..strange thing about our dogs is that their love is unconditional………had I chosen to jump off the 2000 ft cliff Murphy would have happily came with me…..in his eyes I am his pack leader so any decision I make is a good one…………

If I was Murphy, and you had jumped off the cliff, I’d have been thinking – yeah right 😕

He’s only pack leader when he’s out on his own! 😉
