  • Cutting Text in Signlab

Posted by David Lowery on February 24, 2010 at 9:52 am

Our local council has had a new printer installed and is running it from Signlab. They have a problem that when they print and contour cut, they do not know how to get the cut in the middle of the letters, like the centre of an O.
Also they want to know how to make the contour cut wider than the printed lettering.

    Assistance please.

    Hi Dave
In the contour cut toolbar, ensure inside/outside is selected and not outside only(bitmap frame in SL8). To make the cut wider than the letter simply put a value in the offset box depending on how wide you want surround. Hope that makes sense. 😀

    Cheers Steve!
I have phoned the chap who uses this software and explained to him but it’s like wading through mud to get him to understand. If you could be more specific in exactly what to do when he has a O on screen, step by step, that would be great. He does my head in but we do a lot of work for them so have to look after them where we can 😉

    No Problem Dave,
Select the letters to contour by clicking on it.
In the Cut menu at the top of screen select contour cut. This will bring up the contour cut toolbar. At the top left of the screen you will have 2 selection boxes. One is inside/outside. The other is outside only(it could read bitmap frame if its Signlab 8). Put a tick in the inside/outside box. Make sure the other box is not ticked.
To add a border round the letter put a figure of say 2 in the offset box, this will offset the cut by 2mm (assuming he is working in metric). Obviously the figure will be determined by how wide he wants the border.
Then just click on a blank part of the workspace and the toolbar will disappear, leaving you with a lovely contour cut line.
    Lots of luck Dave

So what have they got there, £10,000 worth of software and printer and not a clue how to operate it.
Added to that they expect a sign business to tell them how to do it free of charge.
    Am I missing something?
Perhaps the Council should employ the services of a local sign company. 😮

As Dave has said, if it is Signlab 8, they need to check the box Inside/Outside if it is Signlab 7.1 they need to click the magenta circle that is the second icon from the left. (outside/inside contour).

    Thanks Steve….That sorted him out.

Yes Peter, they are not the brightest workers in the trade, which is why, when they have any problems, they come to me. They have a new computer with the latest signlab and a brand new Mimaki that they are using for everything, including speed limit signs. When I pointed out that they will fade a lot quicker than cut vinyl, their attitude is "well, we will have to remake them again – it’ll keep us in work" 🙄

As I have said, I do a lot of work for them so am happy to help them out, much the same way I try, where I can, to help out on these boards as well 🙂
