• Cutting table

Right that’s my workshop ordered and is going to be erected on the 22nd of May…….. 10 x 14ft

Now I’m just trying to sort out the inside lol :lol1:

Main thing I’m confused about is my cutting table, I’ve got everything else sussed

What size and material to use is my main problem, at the moment I get my sheets of material pre-cut to my size so never had a great use for a cutting table apart from the small (2×4 ft) worktop that I use in the house but since i’ll have alot of space in the shed I can get something decent

Any tips or pointers before I start? 😮

    Cheers guys and girls

A few posts on here on this I think John. I am using a sheet of Di Bond which works really well. Have a 8 x 4 sheet of toughened glass ready to fit into our new worktop when we build our new computer room. (whenever the work slows down?!)

we also use glass to cut, weed, and apply app tape it’s about 8′ x 4′ spect it depends on room, what did you weed on etc. before ???

Do a search for ‘polypropylene’ – loads of discussion on cutting mats etc.

I use a couple of 3mm x 8×4’s on my bench. Had one for nearly 3 years now – still doing great.

Yer, Right John, lets see how long you are saying that :lol1: I bet within a couple of weeks you will be thinking it is to small!!!!

As for what sort of size, I would have a think about what else is going to have to go in there first and how much space you will need to work and move about. You are never going to have a table that will cover every job you do but if you go for something about 10-12 foot in length that would do you better than an 8 x 4 as you will still have enough room to get something like a tape dispenser on the end of the bench along with an 8 x 4 board. Really the bigger you can make it the better but obviously you are still quite limited in a 14 x 10 shed. I would say as long as the majority of the work that you do fits on OK you can always work round the odd job you get that won’t fit, as for cutting surface I would agree with most above, if you can afford it go for glass as it will last you forever.

I took dave rogers advice and so far the sheets work a treat, get them from europoint, about £35-£40 per 8×4 sheet.

I made our bench 10′ x 3′ with a thin steel worktop instead of glass as I like to use magnets when initially positioning graphics before taping. Also find a couple of trestles handy to extend the bench when I get the occasional ‘long’ job.

right I think i’ll go with the glass option

how much is it roughly for a 8x4ft piece?

and where is the best place to get it from??

Also need to design the table well so that it doesn’t buckle under the weight of the glass 🙄

John don’t you do any signs for double glazing makers and fitters ???? if not your nearest glass shop and you need toughened, ours is 5ml I think with rounded edges
