CUTTING ORDER
Posted by Clive Martinez on November 18, 2008 at 3:42 pmHi,
Can anyone tell me what is I have to do in Corel Draw so my roland 24" plotter will cut in some sort of sequence?
right now its rolling to one end of the graphic, cutting one letter and then going to the other end and cutting another letter. The tracking goes crazy and after so much traveling of the vinyl, the centre of the "o" will not match up. IT also takes much longer to cut anything out. Thanks
Clive

In Gerber software, in your window that pops up when you send a file out to plot, there is a little menu where under "layout" you can tick "Sequence plot". Maybe your plotter program has this option also?

You will need to open up the "Object Manager" and rearrange the listed objects. The item at the bottom of the list is cut first and works sequentially to the top of the list. If you have a lot of objects, select a few and group them together and then shuffle those into the cutting order you want.

Hi Clive
Afraid I can’t help you, but I also would love to know the answer to this, as sometimes Signlab cutting does the same, with both text and graphics. Sometimes it will cut a tiny piece in the same place of graphics where I am cutting multiples, whizzing back & forth…
The only pattern I can see is that it appears to cut (sometimes) in same order that it has been made in.
Very puzzleing.Lorraine

correct
on a single layer the rear most part cuts first in order then to the front
on a converted bitmap the loop that starts at the top is first then as it was scanned down the next loop start, thats why traced images go all over the place.

Is there any way to make it cut in a more logical order? I’ve tried grouping, ungrouping etc, but no real pattern emerging.

Lorraine, select the cut setup dialogue then "sort" and what you need is there.
You can also set up a manual order by selecting an object, then layout/sequence and you select each item in the order you want it cut.
Signlab 8 has more ways of setting up a sequence. -

That is why "Object Manager" in Corel is such a handy list, not such a problem on a small area, but when running several meters of vinyl back and forth then you end up with accumulated errors and a much longer cut time. I mainly started to optimise graphics for engraving and have continued this with my move into vinyl. Engravelab 5 (and probably Signlab) doesn’t have much in the way of controlling the order of objects, but thats where I fully utilise Corel, then export my tool path as an Ai drawing.
For anyone using Corel to cut or engrave from its well worth getting to grips with this feature.

Ok Lynn and Derek, I have found ‘sort’, and it was set at ‘database’ so have changed setting to ‘nearest sort’. I’ll find out tomorrow what happens, only popped in to put up a couple of shop fascia’s in the high street, and waiting for my son to come out of school, then home.
Thanks!

Thanks for all your help.
I found that the best solution for Corel draw was as
Graeme Harrold suggested. Using Object manager, and grouping in smaller sections. Thanks again…
