Cutting letters and logos using a jigsaw, views and opinions please?
I was wondering, does everyone just buy their flat cut letters and logos in these days?
Do none of you do this by hand? By that I mean cut acrylic, foamboard or composite letters using a jigsaw or band saw using vinyl or a pen plotted template?
I have done a few odd jobs lately where the pandemic hasn’t allowed me to buy stuff in. so I have just reverted to doing myself!
yes, I had a bit more time on my hands. but I actually enjoyed it more being a bit more creative. I am just wondering if we are getting lazy or if the expectations of the customer are so much higher we dare not give it a go ourselves?

I think a few things come into play here Gary.
Buying it in from trade suppliers, cost and turnaround outweigh manually doing it yourself.
You then have the fact, machine cut letters are better than hand-cut!However, skilled workmanship is hard to come by these days and this is just a sign of the times, unfortunately.
Regardless, if you can do it in-house and have the time to, then why not?
We still fabricate things manually, on a daily basis. The sign industry is so diverse, you would be crazy to stop staff from learning these aspects of sign making.
Take big sign companies like SignFab, they still manually make their built-up letter and solder the returns. and make an excellent job of doing it too!I am sure many here still do this type of thing in-house.

I still use a jigsaw and file when possible like the old’n days. Unfortunately due to issues with my hands i cant use a jigsaw for too long..

Jigsaw or band saw for me too. though i do not do much of this type of thing and I buy in letters.

That’s exactly what I mean John, things like this!
Everything appears to be bog-standard flat panel signs. Even digital printed things could be shaped and raised on stand-off fixings.
