• cutting flock – HOW?

Posted by jkape on November 3, 2004 at 11:55 am

Hello everyone I am just wondering what settings and knife I need to cut flock. I am using a Roland SP-300 with a medium hardness blade and an offset of 0,225. Do I need the extra hard blade for this job? What does offset do ? Is Flock really not suitable to cut thin letters e.t.c. ?

    Anyone knows ?
    Thanks

    Hello Iosif,

Excuse my suprise, but are you actually thinking of cutting flock in a VersaCAMM?

The SP-300 will quite happily cut the flock with the blade and offset you have mentioned, the real problem is the mess that will be left behind.

When you cut flock, lots of tiny strands and filaments fly everywhere, the last place you would want that is inside a printer.

I would recommend you cut flock in a standard cutter/plotter that can handle dust etc, it’s not worth messing up an expensive VersaCAMM for a bit if flock.

I hope this is of help.

    Regards,
    Mark

don’t use the Roland Blade – you would be better using one of Edward Mathias Smart Knives with an offset of 0.5 – 00447836361593 (talk to Harry)

Also depends whether or not you are using the smooth or hairy flock

Thank you for your answers guys, I went over to Roland and they suggested I use a blade that has a really small tip (I think its use is for cutting masks – green tip). Surprisingly that worked with minimum pressure (40) and normal offset (0.250) even on small letters.
As for using the sp-300 for flock well partly you are right, yes it probably is not very good for the machine, but from my point of view as I am new to all this (I have a years experience doing promo t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, tiles, small stickers, magnets, posters and other things) I expect to have a few things going wrong, that is why I joined this forum.
I have learned quite a bit and done many mistakes from which I learned.

    Thanks for your help
